This Hyundai Genesis Coupe Makes 800 hp AT THE WHEELS

by Jens Meiners | Photography by Michael Simari

Hyundai infused its second-generation Genesis sedan with sophistication, but the original Genesis coupe, which remains in production, is as rambunctious as ever (for good and bad). And that trait has been underscored in bold by this SEMA show car created by Illinois-based tuner Blood Type Racing.
BTR’s car is coated in custom Candy Red paint, and it packs a bored-out, 2.2-liter version of Hyundai’s turbocharged four-cylinder. The 2.0-liter production version of that engine was phased out for the 2015 model year, but its potential for MAX POWER couldn’t be more clear: BTR says it has muscled up the four to almost 1000 crank horsepower, with more than 800 making it to the rear wheels. There is the requisite nitrous system, of course, and the engine has fully customized turbo gear and fuel-delivery systems. The internals are completely overhauled with bits from ARP, Brian Crower, CP, and more. A six-speed manual is the gearbox of choice.

To deal with the extreme power, BTR beefed up the chassis with Stance coil-overs, new anti-roll bars with adjustable end links, a set of strut-tower braces, new underbody bracing, and Wilwood brakes, among other changes. The rear seats were tossed, a roll cage was installed, and Sabelt supplied the single-piece racing seats, harnesses, and steering wheel.
A set of 19-inch Work two-piece custom wheels is wrapped in Toyo R888 rubber, and the whole thing wears a wide-body kit designed by Kei Miura, whose name resonates in the tuner and street-racing communities. While this isn’t our usual beat, the car looks absolutely bad-***.

You Gotta Know When to Holden: SEMA-Bound Chevrolet SS Sport Concept Plays Up Aussie Heritage

October 17, 2014 at 12:32 pm by Andrew Wendler | Photography by Michael Simari

It’s no secret that the Chevrolet SS sedan we know and love is but a few tweaks removed from the Australian Holden Commodore. In fact, Chevrolet says that the V-8 sedan’s Down Under heritage has become something of a source of pride for many owners and fans of the stateside SS. Looking to highlight the ties for the 2014 SEMA show, Chevrolet ginned up the Holden-tinged Chevrolet SS Sport concept.
Wearing a coat of “Some Like it Red Hot” paint, the SS concept gets body-color door handles and mirrors, as well as a whole mess of blacked-out bits from the Chevrolet Accessories catalog, including a grille kit, new fog-lamp bezels, a rear spoiler, and new fender vents. Black stripes are applied to the hood and decklid, and a set of 20-inch black wheels was bolted on—measuring 8.5 inches wide up front and 9.0 inches wide out back—with all four getting Holden-logo center caps.

More Holden-ness comes inside, with floor mats and a cargo tray emblazoned with the Aussie brand’s lion and stone. A sport pedal kit and—YES!—a cargo net round out the tweaks. Americans looking to add the Holden-branded items mentioned here to their car need look no further than the Chevrolet Accessories catalog. Pretty choice, right? The SS Sport concept is powered by the same rowdy LS3 V-8 as found in the production car. For 2015, its 415 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of twist can be funneled through your choice of a six-speed automatic transmission or the no-cost-optional six-speed manual. Chevrolet would also like us to remind you that the 2015 SS also gets the Magnetic Ride Control adaptive suspension as standard, as well as new Brembo rear brakes (the fronts were already Brembo pieces).

Which is the more amazing feat: Switzerland’s Francois Gissy leaving a Ferrari 430 Scuderia sitting still at the dragstrip as he recorded 3.1 g’s of accelerative force on his way to a top speed of 207 mph, or that he did this on a BICYCLE? That bicycle, incidentally, was equipped with a rocket engine supplying 4.2 kN (944 pounds) of thrust.

Gissy hit that 207-mph mark in just 4.8 seconds, at the 300-meter mark of the run. His quarter-mile time was a scant 6.8 seconds. If he has his way, Gissy could turn the 23-day Tour de France into a friendly afternoon of rocket-propelled insanity. Note that the actual record run was solo. The face-off against the Ferrari appeared to be for giggles. It was still the most comprehensive ***-kicking ever.
