Few other cars on the market say ‘muscle’ quite like the Chevy Camaro. In a class with only a few major competitors — like the Ford Mustang or Dodge Challenger — the Camaro is one of two or three cars that helped put incredible performance machines in the hands of the working class, and even to this day keeps upping the ante.
The Camaro has a rich history with many twists and turns, but ultimately left us with the incredible muscle car we know and love today. The car was originally announced as an addition to the Chevrolet lineup in 1966, and was a call to action in response to Ford’s Mustang pony car. The car then saw multiple variations and iteration through a few decades, and was finally mothballed — albeit temporarily — in 2003 after 35 years of production.
The fifth-generation Camaro finally hit the market in 2010, and ushered in a whole new era in muscle car manufacturing. Keeping pace with Ford and Dodge, the most recent generation of Camaros has seen a slew of special edition models and variants, making for some of the quickest and best-performing cars Chevy has ever produced.
With that in mind, which Camaro models are the fastest, exactly?
Well, there are a lot to choose from, but we’ve dug into the details to figure it all out. We’ve compiled a list of the quickest Camaros ever, ranked according to their zero-to-60 time. We’ve excluded modified and racing models, and stuck to units that had production numbers.
Read on to see the 8 fastest Camaro models of all time.
8. Camaro IROC-Z
Looking back through the years, if there was one member of the Camaro’s third-generation that could outrun all the others it was the IROC-Z. Digging back through Motor Trend’s archives, the IROC-Z was tested on the track hitting 60 miles per hour from zero in 5.8 seconds. This particular model was able to speed past its predecessors with a 5.7-liter TPI V8 engine that produced 245 horsepower. While not particularly powerful by today’s standards, the IROC-Z took advantage of its lower weight to be extremely quick.

7. 1969 ZL1 Camaro
If one Camaro model can be pointed out as an absolute legend, it’s the 1969 ZL1. This Camaro took street performance to the next level, with the capability to rocket to 60 miles per hour in 5.3 seconds. That’s quick by today’s standards, but back in the late 1960s? Those speeds were extremely rare, and the ZL1 brought that kind of capability to the average driver. With the ZL1’s extraordinary performance all those decades ago, it’s no wonder that the Camaro nameplate has become so iconic over the years.
6. Camaro Fourth-Generation SS
According to a Motor Week test trial conducted way back in 2001, the fourth-generation Camaro SS — toward the end of its life cycle — could make the jump to 60 miles per hour in 5.2 seconds. That SS model doubled as the Pontiac Firebird, both of which used a 5.7-Liter LS1 Pushrod V8 that produced 325 horsepower and 340 pound-feet of torque. These cars also represented the 35th anniversary edition of the Camaro, making it as special as it was quick.

5. Camaro Fourth-Generation Z28 SS
The fourth-gen Z28 hit the market in 1993, ushering in a whole new era for the Camaro, and one that many people would rather forget. The fourth-generation Z28 — the Camaro’s range-topping model — could reach 60 miles per hour in 5.2 seconds. The Z28 barely gets the nod in the rankings over the SS model, as it was able to produce slightly more torque. This would be the final redesign the Z28 would receive before the Camaro’s hiatus during most of the 2000s, when the fifth-generation would return in 2010.

4. Camaro Fifth-Generation 2SS
Who wouldn’t want one of their favorite toys as a kid come to life right before their eyes? Well, in 2013, Chevy and Hot Wheels let it happen. The result? The Camaro Hot Wheels Edition. A limited number were produced, and it was the first time that a Hot Wheels car had actually been brought to life. Though it uses the same 6.2-liter V8 engine as many other variants, the Hot Wheels edition steals some parts from the Camaro ZL1 to squeeze a little extra out, in terms of performance. Motor Trend took it to the track where it went zero to 60 in 4.5 seconds, giving it a slight edge over many other special edition models.

3. COPO Camaro
Adding a bit more bad-assness to the mix, the 2014 COPO Camaro was fitted to NHRA specifications, and was not street legal. However, Chevy is readying some production models for 2015. COPO stands for “central office production order,” and if they live up to the hype, should be able to tackle the 60 miles per hour mark in 4.5 seconds, and top out at 175 miles per hour. The 2015 models are limited to 69 units, with a few different engine options ranging from a 5.7- to 7.0-liter V8. Horsepower and torque levels vary, but the COPO Camaro is an absolute monster no matter what the configuration.

2. Camaro Z28
Likely the most famous model in Camaro history, the Camaro Z28 is also just about the fastest. Despite having a zero-to-60 time of 3.9 seconds (which ties it for the top), the Z28 falls just short in terms of overall power and performance. The Z28 holds a 7.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine under the hood, making up to 505 horsepower and 481 pound-feet of torque. It also has a top speed estimated to be in the 170 miles per hour range. All of that is incredibly impressive, but there is one model that still beats the Z28.

1. Camaro ZL1
Hitting 60 miles per hour from a standstill in 3.9 seconds is a pretty enormous feat, and the newest Camaro ZL1 is able to pull it off without much difficulty. Because of that, the ZL1 earns the crown and the title of quickest Camaro of all time. This Camaro pulls it off in all manners of performance — 580 horsepower, 556 pound-feet of torque, and a top speed of 184 miles per hour — all coming from that famous 6.2-liter supercharged V8 engine. The ZL1 is the sire of the drag strip when it comes to the Camaro line, until Chevy ultimately unveils a challenger that can knock it from the top.

Nice read, thank you for posting.
Back in 96, I had the Z28 SS, for a short 5 months. I couldn't afford the payments especially the insurance, when I got custody of my 9 year old daughter, so I traded it for a Cavalier Z24
I still miss that car!!
So, many years later, with both daughters grown up, I finally got my dream car.
I'm waiting for all the snow to melt and salt to wash away to get her out of storage.
Now I just need that bikini girl to go with me.
This was given to me by FBodFather at my first Car show.

Ehhh this isn't gonna go well for me in a chevy dominated forum but I'm not a fan of camaros as a pony car at all, never liked them. If I had to choose I'd go with a 6 pack barracuda or a 428 or 429 cobra jet mustang before I even start considering a Camaro, or a corvette for that matter.

The First car I ever worked on was a 69 Cherry Red with White stripes Camaro that was Built for Speed. It had been clocked at 181 mph on the track at Englishtown NJ. I don't remember much about what was under the hood other than it was a 350 with 2 intakes, a 4 barrel for street, and a dual 4 barrel for the track. It was the car that made me a Chevy Guy!
My Favorite Camaro though, had to be my 87 IRoc 350. Mostly because it was mine and it was the car that brought me to the Realization that I am a Shade Tree Mechanic. With intake, CAI, and Exhaust mods, I got the HPs, up to about 260. It was the first car I Modified. It was my first 350. And I learned a whole lot from that car. And it Solidified my infatuation with Chevy.
It was Burgundy, (Stink Butt Brown) with Gold interior. I even put a 13.5" steering wheel in it. Although I never raced it, I know it was a Force to be Reckoned with! Deffinitely My Favorite Camaro!!!!!
