First Look: 2006 Pontiac G6 GTP
Excitable Boy

GM's self-declared Excitement Division has been trying to find its pulse lately. Although the Firebird is gone and the Northstar-powered Bonneville GXP tanked, the new V-8-fortified Grand Prix is interesting, and the 400-horse GTO remains a Motor Trend favorite. For 2006, the G6 has begat a coupe, and it retains the sedan's 112.3-inch wheelbase in the name of more-than-occasional rear-seat head and legroom.

The G6 is available with the workaday 201-horse, 3.5-liter V-6 or a beefier 3.9-liter version good for 240 horsepower in GTP trim. The latter includes handsome 18-inch rolling stock, sportier suspension tuning, standard StabiliTrak, and the choice of a boring four-speed automatic or a more involving six-speed manual. Hydraulic power steering replaces the numbish electric steering on standard G6s.

It all adds up to an attractive, pleasantly sporty coupe. If you didn't know this engine's an overhead valver, you'd think it's an overhead cammer: It's smooth, revs nicely, and has a wide powerband and a sweet exhaust note. Its 6.2-second 0-to-60 time isn't the stuff of legend, but enough to have fun. The six-speed shifter is notchy, but better than on many front drivers. This steering is much--no, way--improved over the electric unit, with adequate feel and virtually no torque steer. There's plenty of grip (0.83 g on our skidpad), making the GTP an entertaining handler, if not an all-out road racer. And this coupe easily seats four people in comfort.

The G6 GTP , has high equipment levels, and feels like a fair amount of car for the money.

Well it's possible to put a stick transmission in a 4th gen Monte so why not?

People swear you couldn't do the stick in an '81-88 Monte. Little did these people know the '78-80 Montes, some did come with a manual transmission. And all the parts to convert the '78-80 Montes are all you need to convert an '81-88 Monte to a manual transmission.

So a 6-speed in a 2006, why not?

I'd have to get down to the nitty-gritty of engine placements, and computer requirements to tell for sure, but they probably use the same transaxle setup on that whole aluminium engine cradle thing. Worst fear? Two different bodies and wheelbases means things are definately moved around. Where would stuff fit, and how would it mount?Where the GTP has a hole for the shifterlinkage and clutch connections could be where the Monte hasanother darn computer or something of that sort. Besides cutting a route for the linkages, mounting would be a nightmare. Not to mention the clutch. Doable? Yes.... Weekend job? No.....

Ok, I've been doing some more research on MSN Auto. So the 6 speed manual was an option on the GTP. How in heck does it get 240 ft-lbs of torque at 2800 rpm where the Monte gets 242 at 4400? Does it have a different cam when the VVT kicks in? Obviously with the Monte's VVT kicking in at 4k RPM (personal experience) does the GTP not get VVT? Could it be because of the Manual Tranny not liking the engine suddenly roaring to life with the VVT activation?

Food for thought... hmmmm

Ut-oh, I just found something else. Look at this pic, the I's have it. That center console is scandalously similar to the Monte... but just different enough to be different. But look at the layout, looks like they took the oval auto tranny shifter out, cut a square hole and put the manual tranny shifter in it's place.... I'm liking this. I already want one!

Michael & RJ, thanks for your post & input. I don't think I would attempt it, but it does show
the possibilities of what could be done. Has any member ever driven a six speed GTP ? If so, please post your review. I've been look'in for one on the car lots around my area, but have not found one to test drive : ).

I'm hoping that they make a CAI for the 3.9 & also exhaust : ) I wish Chevy would have put the six speed in the Monte : ) Thanks again. `Space

Me too Space, I can only imagine the grinz i'd beflashin with 6 on the floor. Especially since the 3.9 in the GTP has a very different power curve. I really need to learn more about the engine in the GTP, since it is inherintly different.... Pair the torque advantage of the Monte with the 6 SP of the GTP, and you just might have an all-GM dominator. Even if it is a frankenstein GM... lol!

Off to learn the limits...

Space,

A guy over on Chevy Talk had a company custom make a CAI system for his '57 Chevy.

The place is called: Spectra.

He asked about a system for his car, they said they didn't offer one. He offered his car as a test subject which they said, "OKay" to. so they hand made a system to which they're going to market this kit from the one they made for his car.

He got a free CAI, they got a '57 Chevy to use as a guinea pig.
