Automotive acronyms
Acronyms, Acronyms, Acronyms. Everywhere you look in the automobile industry, acronyms are a part of the language. Sometimes they multiply so fast, especially where new technology is involved, it is like breeding rabbits! Some acronyms such as V8, ABS (antilock brake system) braking or A/C (air conditioning) have become part of the language, but there are many acronyms that are confusing, even when we hear the full text. This is partly because there are new technologies on automobiles that require new words to describe them, but a lot of the confusion comes because the manufacturer's marketing department wants to have the newest and flashiest terms to promote new products.

If you're confused by acronyms, you're not alone. Even repair techs get confused, as the terms used by the marketing department are sometimes different than those used in the parts department and different than those in the repair information. Talk about confusion! Let's look at a couple of the newer technologies used by many manufacturers that are called many different names, so we can understand what is really behind the words and letters.

Variable camshaft timing: GM calls it VVT (variable valve timing). Toyota calls it VVT-i (variable valve timing - intelligent). Honda calls it VTEC (Variable Valve-Timing and Lift Electronic Control), BMW calls it VANOS and Subaru call it Dual AVCS (active valve control system). Those are only four of the names used to describe variable timing of the opening and closing of the engine's valves. Being able to change the opening and closing timing of the engine's valves does wonders for engine performance. Some manufacturers do this by having rotating parts on the front of the camshaft that can change the position of the camshaft in relation to the crankshaft while the engine is running. Typically, engine oil pressure, controlled by the engine computer is used to do this. Other engines will use camshafts with different lobes on them and electronically switch the operation of the valves from one lobe to another. By changing when the valves open and close, the engine can operate at optimum efficiency throughout the rpm range.
At slow engine speeds, there is a relatively long time frame to allow air and fuel to enter the engine cylinders. Air velocity drops and fuel can become separated from the air. To counteract this, opening the intake valve later in the engine cycle keeps air velocity higher. Closing it sooner increases running compression pressures. This acts to increase engine torque at low engine speeds - good for snappy acceleration from a stop and around town driving.
At higher engine speeds, there is less time to allow a full air and fuel charge into the cylinders, so power decreases, unless of course you open the intake valves sooner so there is more time for air to enter. Closing them later also takes advantage of the air's inertia to "ram" more air into the cylinder. This longer period of valve opening increases engine power at high rpm. You might have heard high performance engines that barely idle. They have camshafts designed for high rpm operation. Other engines idle smoothly but lack high-speed power, again due to camshaft design. Variable cam timing allows the best of both.
[b]The variable cam timing is also beneficial on exhaust cams. By changing when an exhaust valve opens and closes, the engine can retain more or less
