Hoping someone has also experienced this.
2002 Monte Carlo SS 51,000 mi.

I have a "chattering" relay type noise behind or under the right side of the dash area [pass. side]. It chatters for 2-3 seconds right after I:
Start the engine.
Shut the engine off.
Open the door.
Shut the door.
Any thoughts on this before I start rippin' and tearin".

Sounds like a loose connection somewhere.
Comes from sudden movements (engine cradle from start/shut off & door slams)?
..or do you think it's electrical?

 

Could e a relay in the firebox on the right side of the dash. Also, is your heat running when you hear it. I notice a similar sound in my 02 when the heater fan is running. Other than that, there isn't much in the way of electronics on that side of the dash. Unless you have an aftermarket alarm system and that is where it is mounted! Back in the day, (I use to chill with Noah on the Ark!), Alarm dealers would mount the alarms behind the glove box.

 

Can you be a little more specific....???? Like something is loose? or something more like a rocker panel rattling? Possibly is it loud...or quiet?
Maybe a loose converter, exhaust pipe hanger broken? if its under dash? like loose wire harness components.... Its kinda hard to pin point Mike when the sound description is so vague...does it sound like something major falling off/out... or like maybe some wire hanger under dash has disconnected or come loose? Maybe the rattle your hearing is something rolling/rattleing around inside the catalytic converter.

 

Welcome to the Forum. Sounds exactly like the issue with the one actuator in the climate control system, which is actually more common in the 06-07 Monte Carlo. The actuators are located right where you say the chattering noise is coming from which is why I'm 99% sure this is your problem.

If the relay is chattering either the energizing coil is receiving fluctuating power, it is energized all the time (which causes a momentary drop in voltage to the relay) which causes the energizing coil to power on/off, the energizing coil may be weak, or you may have a bad ground.
