Unhappy rear strut mount rust

I have been test driving a 2000 monte carlo ss for a couple of days and up on inspection in the trunk while i was changing the brake light bulb i noticed that the bottom part where the light bolts to the body was rusted out...i look up at the strut tower and the top of it was rusted really bad and breaking away...can this be fixed or should i avoid the car totally?other than that it looks and drives awesome!!!Thanks

Thats a tough question:

Without seeing the rust...Theres no real way for us to tell...
That question is totally up to you..If you want a difinitive answer...Take it to your local repair facility and get your answer there...IMO...
Otherwise...If were up to me..Since you said its really bad and breaking away...Me personally...I would avoid it all together....But thats just me!

That just might be the reason he's selling it?

I too HAD a 1999 Monte Carlo Z34. Just turned 148,000 miles and didn't drip a drop of oil anywhere. Engine was strong as could be. Body had the usual rust on rear quarter panels in back. Had that fixed and painted a year ago.
Two months ago went for new brakes and a left rear hub bearing at shop. THEN I noticed a "knocking" noise as if somebody was tapping on side of car in rear. To my shock as I looked up into the strut towers at rear, they were rusted and broken through on three of the four sides! Pulled back rug in trunk and I couldn't believe what I saw.
To make a long story short, that following Monday I was driving a 2002 Monte Carlo SS with 47,000 miles! Got $1,250 trade in at dealership ( covered my brake and hub bearing repairs).
So this 2002 is rust free towers. I shot some wheel bearing grease up there to keep the rust off this one.
