Default New to monte's, but not to forums.

Just bought a 03 Monte SS with the "high sport" ground effects. 68,000 miles. Has few scratches and chips, two small dings by the door handle. Nothing too serious, hardly noticable. The driver seat is a bit worn from getting in and out, and the steering wheel where its been held....but overall in good shape and CLEAN!

But I do have a couple questions...

I know these motors have issues with lower intake gaskets, Should i change them before its a problem?

How bout coolant....Flush out the Dex-cool?

Welcome to the forum.

As for the LIM gaskets, it's up to you. They normally fail in the 80-120K mile range. If you replace them, use the Fel-Pro aluminum ones and never worry about them again.

It's also wise to flush the coolant. You can re-fill with Prestone with Dex (GM recommended) or convert to the ol' green stuff. Either way, no issues. Dex has a bad rep, but it's formula has been altered to no longer have issues like it used to. Plus, it's bad rep is more the nylon gaskets (they fail regardless of what coolant). Just remember, no matter what coolant you use, it does need changed from time to time.

Thanks all. I was wondring if it was the coolant or the gaskets that were the real problem.

I think ill at least flush the coolant. It would be nice to know if the gaskets have already been done but i dont know how youd know without tearing it down. I hate to fix something that isnt really broke but it may be something to do over the winter.

What will be the first sign of failure?

Coolant Loss is the first sign of a problem... So keep an eye on the reservoir!
Once the coolant drops low enough you will also experience over heating if you fail to keep the coolant level properly filled..
Thats generally when the UIM will most likely fails once overheating becomes an issue.

Welcome to the best forum on the Planet!
Nice looking MonteCarlo!!!

Welcome to the site. Like Maniac said either antifreeze is fine as long as you flush it out periodically.
