Default New to the Monte Carlo

Hey everyone,

I bought a 2003 Monte Carlo SS (3.8L natural aspirated) a few weeks ago, only had 75,000 miles on it and so far I love the car. But I'm having a problem I am hoping you guys can help me out with.

It started a few weeks ago, when I accelerated hard the car stalled out at about 4000 rpm and the check engine light started flashing. The light stopped flashing and went off after I left off the accelerator.
Since then I hadn't notice anything significant, but I was testing it this weekend and when it got up in the 4000 rpm range the power would die and the car makes a terrible metallic sound.

Now the car doesn't have any power above 2500 rpm and the fuel mileage has decreased from 29 to 24 mpg.

Like I said the check engine light isn't on and the car seems to idle just fine. It just bogs down at any kind of engine load.

I think I am going to replace the fuel filter but does any one have any ideas what could be the problem and if its ok to keep driving the car?

Thanks everyone for any help you can give me.

Welcome to the forum. I have heard of a few owners having this issue with many different car makes/models. That is just something to look at when you lose power like that.

I would suggest looking through some of the other forum threads and get some ideas of what could be happening. That is how I found/fixed the oil leak I had.

Guess the other question is, what causes the cat to clog up?
