New member looking for opinions on a 1988 Monte Carlo

A little more info to report: It has a rebuilt tranny with 5k on it, a shift kit, and the gearing is 3.73:1. now, i do not know much about what gearing is what, i know you can change it for highway or city driving and that is about it. I know i will use it mostly for city... As for the body, the rocker panels have a bit of bondo, but the rest is solid...

If the rockers have bondo in them you are looking at some major body work to save it. The bondo will need to be ground out to determine the extent of damage, the rusted area cut out and new sheet metal welded into place. Otherwise the surrounding area will rust, the bondo will crack and fall off the car. If the rockers are rusted I'd take a real good look at the frame to insure it isn't also rusting away. A magnet in a sock (or covered by some other material) passed along the surface of the vehicle will detect any other areas that were repaired with bondo. For the price I think you'd be buying a rust bucket in disguise...be careful and completely check the car top to bottom before tossing your coin down on the table.
