Default new guy....saying hello and also in need of a little assistance

Hey guys. My namenis jeff. I live in toms river Nj. I don't own a Monte anymore, but I did have an 87 ss up until about two years ago...anyway...I'm a boat mechanic by trade, but I'm also really good with cars...anyway I currently own a 97 grand am gt...my dd is a 2000 olds intrigue. Anyways. Someone posted a pfd file regarding the 3100 to 3400 swap...was wondering if anyone had this. I believe it was written by grand am owners. I will be doing this swap in the near future and would like to know which engine codes interchange any other things I might need to know. Nice to meet ya and thanks in advance...

Cheers!!!

We have a little info in our FWD Tech Guides section on the 3100-to-3400 swap topic.

Here is the thread with the PDF that was sourced from the Grand Am community a long time ago. Keep in mind, even though it is very detailed, it chronicles one person's swap and for each car there may be a few changes that need to be adapted. Hope this helps:

Hey guys......thanks for the warm welcome.... And the info. I am alsonreally interested in a 5 speed swap for this car. I'm trying to figure out which trannys will fit and what additional parts I'm going to need. Sobif anyone has info on that it would be awesome. I searched but I'd really like to talk to someone who has done the conversion. First hand advice. Why gm didn't offer a std trans with the v6 option is beyond me, this car would be a blast to drive with a manual, even with a 3.1.....so is it possible to do a 3.4/5 speed conversion in a 97 grand am gt ? Difficulty ? I've done tons of swaps, marine and the like. Mostly straight forward stuff though. So I'd like to know what I'm getting into. I'm sure its been asked a million times already but I can't find too much info on it. A 3400 5 SPD Grand am gt would be nice. Make a fun commuter.

I'm with you, GM had a bunch of cars with a v6 that would have been perfectly matched with a manual trans. When I had my '94 Grand Am, I was told the reason the manual was offered on the 4-cylinder was it was considered the "sport" option (seriously, what a joke if that is true, I think it's more "econobox").
And even with my current '04 Grand Am, a manual would make it more fun.

Anycase, I've read of a Grand Prix, Impala and Bonnevile (all 3800 powered car) that had a Getrag manual trans swapped in, lots of custom fab work.

Since the 4-cylinder Grand Ams had manual shift options, I'd imagine getting things like pedal clusters and such are a LOT easier. Not sure how many people have done a manual trans swap.

Here's something to look at (I don't know anything about it, just this shop sells this kit for the v6 N-Bodies):
