What year is this? I assume 00-05?

If my assumption is correct, try messing with the shifter. Such as push it forward/back and try removing the key. I believe there is a mechanism/sensor by the shifter causing the issue.

What are you fixing?

Default My Monte Can Be A Headache

It's a 1997, and we figured out the issue, the ignition lock cylinder was broken causing the key to get stuck, we got it out and also got the key removed from it. The parts store here had a new one however our key doesnt wk in it and the keys that came with it do not contain the chip like ours does, so problem fixed BUT not fixed bc now we will b spending $ to have the keys to the new ignition chipped in order to b able to actually Start the car again.......😕

It is probably best to stay with GM parts on this issue if possible, instead of the everyday parts store.
On these 5th Gen Montes with the ignition on the steering column.
When the car is shut off make sure the steering wheel is straight and not cramped to one side this will lock the thing up.
It sometimes can be a pain to get it back, the car needs to kinda relax some to solve the issue.
