How cani tell if my car is a Fed. or California car?

Default How cani tell if my car is a Fed. or California car?
I live in S.F. and bought my 1984 Monte Carlo SS from a guy who had Hawaii plates on it... my question is how can i tell if its a California car or a Federal car? I just want know for emissions sake. I asked the dealer and they didnt know.....Thanks!!
