Welcome to the site.
87 octane fuel should be fine for your car. You can try 89 and then move upto 91 octane to see if that works. Altho, I think the problem is more in the engine. If the spark plugs and wires are good then it could be something like a coil pack going out or a vaccum leak or a senser. If you have a way of scanning the car that will help you figure out what is going on. Anyways I hope this helps.

Welcome to the site - not necessary to use premium (to me it would be a waste of money) - have you thought of getting a tune up with that many miles?

Welcome!
87 octane is perfectly fine for your 3400 (it's the recommended fuel for 3100/3400/3800na, you don't need high octane until you work with a Supercharger).
Now this problem recently began?
My guess, as suggested is tune up time. You said your car has 120,000 miles on it. The factory plugs are rated to last between 100,000-150,000 miles. At this mileage, I would recommend (if not done already):
- Plugs and Wires (do not use BOSCH plugs, you'll regret it. AC Delco is the best recommended plugs and wires).
- Change Air and Fuel Filter
- Inspect the serpentine belt
- Replace the up stream O2 sensor (use AC Delco or Delphi replacement units)
- Consider using something like a turkey baster from the $1 store and suck out as much fluid as you can from the power steering and brake fluid reservoirs. Top off with fresh fluid. This is not a "fluid flush", but it helps introduce some fresh fluid and remove some fluid that has broken down.
These are all things I did to the '05 Impala we bought last December with 150,000 on it (same drive train as your Monte). The car ran fine, but given it's age and mileage, this was cheap insurance to keeping it reliable. I could not believe it ran so good on 150,000 miles on the factory plugs.
Hope that list helps keep your ride going for years to come!
