You will not believe this. I removed the intermediate steering shaft which had been causing trouble and discovered that the previous owner had lubed it, but had also left the cork, used in the greasing process, in the shaft! So the universal joint was binding against it and causing the clicking.
We removed it, then to use the $30 we had spent at the GM dealer, we relubed it with the special grease. And this time took the plug out!
Having real problems getting the lower end back on the steering box shaft. Any suggestions?
