Arrow Rac'in Update 4/13

Track Talk for the weekend of April 10 - 12

THE BIG STORY
Joey Logano passed Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Kyle Busch with 10 laps to go and won Saturday's Pepsi 300 Nationwide event at Nashville Superspeedway.
Also: Richard Petty will be formally involved in the Indianapolis 500 for the first time, working with Dreyer & Reinbold to field a No. 43 for John Andretti. The car will have Petty's famous blue and red colors… A.J. Allmendinger has sponsorship for his No. 44 Dodge until at least the start of the Chase… Aric Almirola's No. 8 Chevrolet has been parked due to lack of sponsorship… Panther Racing will field a car for Scott Sharp in the Indy 500… Joey Saldana swept the World of Outlaws' weekend in Texas. In the Kasey Kahne-owned sprinter, Saldana won Saturday night's Texas Shootout at Houston Raceway Park, after taking Friday night's event at Lone Star Speedway… Switzerland's Neel Jani won the A1GP feature race in Portugal, his record 10th series victory.

NASCAR Nationwide Series
Saturday's 225-lap event at Nashville came down to the two Gibbs' Toyota Camry drivers, although both had problems. Kyle Busch had fender damage after a bumping incident with Michael McDowell on a restart. Joey Logano had an engine misfire at top speed, apparently due to an alternator problem. Logano was able to get around Busch with 10 laps to go, just before a multi-car accident on the front straightaway forced a red flag to clean up debris. Logano was able to hold on by .487 second. He averaged 118.145 mph with 10 yellows for 40 laps. Logano led 95 laps. Brad Keselowski was third in a Chevrolet. Carl Edwards was fifth and maintained a 23-point edge over Busch.

Racer of the Week
Joey Saldana. On top for a pair of World of Outlaws' events in Texas

Yes, He REALLY Said
ThatRichard Petty, on John Andretti driving his Indy 500 entry. "I'm not sure if I can be of any help to him, but he's going to have no bigger supporter than myself."

This Weekend
NASCAR has Friday night Nationwide and Saturday night Cup racing in Phoenix. ALMS goes in Long Beach Saturday with IndyCars Sunday. NHRA runs near Atlanta. Formula One travels to China.

On the Move: Others Closing In On The Top 12 – And Possible Chase Berth

Here’s the beauty of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup: Drivers may be out of the top 12 right now but by no means are they out of championship contention.
The top 12 drivers in points after Race No. 26 at Richmond will qualify for NASCAR’s “playoffs,” meaning the Chase, which consists of the season’s last 10 races.
A number of drivers are on the move in the standings, such as:
• Juan Pablo Montoya, whose seventh-place finish at Texas boosted him to 13th in the points this week. Montoya is bidding to make the Chase for the first time.
• Greg Biffle, an expected championship contender, finished third at Texas and is up to 15th in points.
• The disastrous start experienced by Dale Earnhardt Jr. is finally being balanced by some consistency. Earnhardt is up to a solid 16th in the standings.
• Ryan Newman, the other half of the new Stewart-Haas team, is likewise coming around after a very slow start. He’s up to 17th.
• And then there’s Mark Martin, the series veteran who returned from semi-retirement to full-time driving this year for Hendrick Motorsports. Martin had a top-10 run at Texas and he’s now 18th in points.

The Top 5 in NASCAR Sprint Cup: Where The Elite Meet

A classic battle has shaped up, at the top of the standings in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. It’s a “battle royal” if there ever was one: Four of the top five drivers in the current standings are former NASCAR Sprint Cup champions.
This is just about as good as it gets for this early in the season.
• You have four-time champion (1995, 1997, 1998, 2001) Jeff Gordon leading the pack and coming off his first win since November 2007, at Texas Motor Speedway.
• Three-time defending series champion Jimmie Johnson is second in points, after finishing second to Gordon in Texas.
• 2004 champion Kurt Busch is third in the standings.
• And two-time (2002 and 2005) champion Tony Stewart is fifth in points – in his first year as a driver-owner.
The total number of points separating Gordon from Stewart: 216.

Jeff Gordon is back on his game after capturing the checkered flag at Texas Motors Speedway last Sunday, officially ending his 47-race winless streak that dated back to Oct. 13, 2007.
RADIO ANSWER: Homestead-Miami Speedway is now the only track Jeff Gordon does not have a win at
Gordon has done a lot over his 18-year NASCAR Sprint Cup Series career, but he is using this season to settle some unfinished business.
Gordon leads all active drivers in wins at different tracks, including 21 of 22 tracks on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule. The one track left on the active schedule where he hasn’t won is Homestead-Miami Speedway. Winning there would be big, but Gordon has set his eyes on a bigger prize.
Most notably on his list of “have yet to dos” is winning the NASCAR Sprint Cup championship in the Chase format.
His two highest finishes in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup were third in the 2004 Chase, and second in the 2007 Chase.

LEBANON, Tenn. — Joe Gibbs Racing’s Joey Logano slipped past teammate Kyle Busch with nine laps to go and hung on to win the Nashville 300 Nationwide Series race at Nashville Superspeedway.

I was surprised to see Joey hold off KB for the win. i missed the beginning of the race though and apparently joey was pretty dominant all day. hopefully that will help boost his confidence on the cup side and he'll start running up front with the big boys. i still say he would have benefited greatly from a full season (or two) in the NW series but tony kinda ruined that by leaving Gibbs a year before his contract was up. *oops* lol. more power to joey though for sucking it up and jumping in headfirst.
