Jimmie Johnson goes for 4 in a row at Phoenix
Posted by admin/Space
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Last November, Jimmie Johnson (No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet) made track history by becoming the first driver to win three consecutive races at Phoenix International Raceway.
On Saturday, the three-time and defending NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion will attempt to extend that history with a fourth consecutive Phoenix victory — this time in the SUBWAY Fresh Fit 500.
“There’s not really anything I can put my finger on,” Johnson said. “I know that’s a popular question, wanting to know why a driver does well at a certain track. I think something just clicks with certain drivers at certain places. We’ve just been able to get the car comfortable for me and I’ve just been able to get around the track. During a race there’s a lot that can go on at a short track like Phoenix and having a good pit stall and good pit stops is important too.”

Sweeps The Norm Rather Than Exception At Phoenix
Although it looks benign nestled against the Estrella Mountains, Phoenix International Raceway can be as tough as any wildlife lurking in nearby peaks.
The flat, one-mile track features tight turns and a unique dog-leg-shaped backstretch that forces concentration from beginning to end of each lap.
Yet once drivers “tune in” to those nuances, they tend to stay attuned. Just ask Jimmie Johnson, who hopes Sunday’s SUBWAY Fresh Fit 500 will be his fourth consecutive victory there.
Sweeping seems contagious at Phoenix. There have been two season sweeps since the venue began hosting two NASCAR Sprint Cup events in 2005. (PIR had its first series race in 1988).

i love this track, it's up there as one of the most unique on the circuit. racing some of our instructors and crew there a couple weeks ago (with work) was more fun than i could have expected. the dogleg coming off of turn 2 definitely makes for an interesting lap. and it has CACTUS in the infield!! that was hilarious to me. and the mountains surrounding the track are very pretty. one of the security guys told me they have cowboys with pillowcases that go up into the mountain next to the track, the mornings of the races, and get all the rattlesnakes out so people can sit there and watch the race. i dunno about that, i still wouldn't be comfortable sitting there! the best part of that trip, for the record, was the cowboy i saw on his horse...at the circle k down the street from the track. ....guess they needed to fill up??
anyway, here are my picks:
1. tony stewart
2. jimmie johnson
3. kevin harvick
phoenix is tony's west coast home, and damnit he's bound to win eventually. he practiced really well today. it's hard to deny jimmie johnson though, having won the last 4 in a row here. very excited to get back to racing!! boogity boogity boogity!!

I'm with you cowboy, but what do we do? I agree he's f'ing the whole thing up - he makes me mad. I feel so stupid when he's on the tv in front of me. Makes me embarrassed to be into Nascar like I am. What the hell can we do? Is there someone at FOX that we can kill which will make them say "Oh, we can't have Digger without him"? If that's all it takes...
