The "Weird Talladega moment of the day" is a tragic one....
Petty was having issues here this particular year, and the car had a wheel bearing catch fire (which nearly happened to Jeff Gordon at Texas this year), and they went into the pits... Randy Owens, who was a cousin to Richard's wife, Linda, wnet ot fill up the pressure tank, but it exploded.... coming down and killing him.
Kyle Petty admitted that he nearly took the role himself, and Randy volunteered... and for years, Kyle wouldn't talk about it... but Linda said years later, he was in the car with her alone, and said, "Mama, I just want you to know I did everything I could that day to save Randy..."
The Petty's felt guilty... Randy was as family as anyone....
After this incident, Richard Petty just pulled the car behind the wall....
