Points and Congratulatory Remarks

Congrats to zjerry for winning at Chicagoland Speedway!!! Big win for that guy, scoring 130 points!

Also, we put a close on Segment 3... which felt like it lasted a while. 03JGMonte pulled that one off by a comfortable margin. But now, we move into our last segment.

The overall lead continues to be held by Carl Martin, but this time, he holds it by the slimmest margin we've seen at this point in the season... 14 points over Brent! This makes it exciting going down that last 9 week stretch!

Some NASCAR Hitsory

In 1999-2000, New Hampshire was the deadliest track in NASCAR. Kenny Irwin and Adam PEtty lost their lives here with throttle hanging issues, which is scary since Jeff Gordon had a throttle hang in Kansas and was clearly scared (in my opinion) in his voice after the race car hit the wall.....

This is Kenny Irwin's crash.

Adam Petty's crash...

And as a result, NASCAR actually ran restricter plates to curve straightaway speeds. This track was boring enough as it was though. With so man ycar sslowed down, the corner entry thing was too easy to figure out, so the race turned into a freight train with Jeff Burton leading every single lap en route to a victory.

It went down in history as quite frankly teh most boring race in NASCAR History.

Another issue here during the summer is usually the rain....

I haven't done much Torino stuff in the last two weeks. So here are a couple of shots of an early night race in NASCAR history. This was at Islip Speedway in upstate New York. James Hylton and Bill Champion ran well in this race.

Before TV showed upat Bristol in the early 80's, the lighting at night races was minimal. You couldn't see lug nuts... heck you could barelly see hwere you were going. That was part of hte excitement. The techonlogy with the mirror reflectors on the wall and all that wasn't figured out yet.

This Week in New Hampshire

They said on race day that the rear end set up rule changes were just to prevent teams from taking this trick any further... my reading earlier in the week was they were stopping temas from doing the whole set up. I do'nt think it was as much of an issue on the flat tracks like New Hampshire in the first place. I think guys like Denny Hamlin, the Hendrick cars, and the such will be the strong factors this week though.

The chase race here is usually a more boring one. Guys are trying to log laps and just clock a good finish on the first chase race. Some years, it gets exciting... but not often.

The Favorites

Denny Hamlin has had bad luck for a couple of weeks, but I still think he has to be a major big time favorite this week. He had by far the fastest car and a miscommunication on the team led to a 4 tire stop at the end that set him back in traffic. I think with his recent speed he will be a big factor at New Hampshire.

When we came here in the summer, the Hendrick cars were running 2-3-4-5 behind Hamiln. AFter that 11 team, I think all the Hendrick cars have to be considered factors this weekend.

Brad Keselowski was busting up taht HEndrick set and I think with the way he will drive cars in the chase, he has to be a factor at New Hampshire.

Bowyer is good at this later New Hampshire race and that team is good right now.

The One's to Watch

Harvick is alright here, but I just look for him to click off another 10th-15th place finish and move on to Dover....

Stewart and NEwman are thought to be ogod this time of year and on this track type, but they were off at New Hampshire and just don't seem to qutie be up to where the regular Hendrick cars are right now. Keep an eye on them though, they might just come alive.

I think Kyle Busch has to be a one to watch and not a favorite. The reason I say that is that he has never won a race in the Chase. He always seems to just fall apart this time of year.

Martin Truex isn't too good on flat tracks, but with the chase on and the pressure there, Truex might come to life.

The ones to AVoid

Anyting with a blue oval on it. the Petty cars might qualify well, but the team shake ups will result in communication lapses for a while. Also, the Roush cars suck here anyway, and the Roush cars have lost some momentum since that Michigan win. They will wait for Dover to come back to life... if a blue oval won at New Hampshire, I'd be amazed.

My Picks

Lets try it this way....

1) Denny Hamlin
2) Kasey Kahne
3) Brad Keselowski

Oh yeah, Pony Stewert, Jr. I was a fan of his from 1999-2002.

I wonder what would happen if some of us or any of us started calling Dale Jr. names or started mis-spelling his name on purpose. Of course we cant. His name sake is legend. Only because of his father will I not. Otherwise I would join in the childish games.
