Points and Congratulatory Remarks

First off, I finally won a race at Phoenix last week in that wild and crazy race, barring a points penalty or anything stupid like that!!!

Here is the first video of me pulling into "Victory Lane"

And here is my victory lane speech!

And while I'm enjoying my iwn, it's all just water under the bridge as far as the overall picture goes. Mike has closed the points to within 6 points for the championship this year. Carl Martin has held that points lead since Darlington ,but Mike is ready to take it away from him at Homestead... Carl needs to return to form here!!

Mike has a fairly firm hold on the points lead with 25 points over me in the segment.

One race... for all the marbles....

Homestead History

This track started out on the schedule in 1999 as a flat 1.5 mile track dominated by Joe Gibbs Racing. Tony Stewart and Bobby Labonte ran 1-2 here two years in a row. The boring racing resulted in NASCAR considering to take the track off the schedule and moving the last race of the year, but Homestead decided to go all out to keep themselves alive and redid the banking of the track to make this a fairly exciting place to end the season!

The of the season has always had the double excitement of seeing who could win the race and who could win the championship, and sometimes celebrating together!!

Rusty Wallace and Dale Earnhardt together ran a backwards lap carrying flags of Allison and Kulwicki who both passed in 1993.... Wallace had won the race, Earnhardt the championship...

In 1992, after Davey crashed, Bill Elliott and Alan Kulwicki raced for the most laps led, the race win, and the championship....

But that's not traditionally how it goes, as stated here....

Intro to Homestead

It's hard to say what will happen this weekend. For the past few years, the championship battle came right down to Homestead. Last year, Edwards and Stewart drove their hearts out to win the race and ran 1-2. The year before, Johnson drove hard to win.

However, it just seems that championship contender run well, but not well enough to win races. Often ,the guy chasing pulls out all the stops to win while the guy on top seems to just run top 5-top10, just enough to protect himself. I odn't really see Brad doing that and if he does, it will probably bite him. I have to think Keselowski will run his @$$ off nad see how well he can run to stay out of mid pack trouble.

And he said Johnson was due for bad luck and then said bad luck could happen to him next week... was he prophetic?

A lot of year,s the winner of this race is a guy who is trying ot get something going for the next year... like Edwards in 2010, or Hamlin in 2009.

Another factor is that all teams will be pulling out a lot of the stops this week because this is the last race on this cars body... some teams are buidling new frames for the new car, even though the new body bolts on the old frame. It will be interesting to see what happens, since the teams say not much from this car carries over to the new one.

The Favorites This Week

The only way for Johnson to win this championship is to pull out all the stops to win a race he has never won at... and go win Homestead. I suspect he will pull out all the stops to do it too. With his success on 1.5's so far, I think he'll be a factor. Homestead is one of like 4 tracks on teh circuit he has never won on, and I suspect he may wish to change that.

Other than that, the Ford's like to run well here too... Biffle has more wins here than anyone, Kenseth has done well, and Edwards has a pair of wins at this track! They could go out and win it again! With their name on the race, it makes sense that they will go out and try to win it! They'll probably be running those ugly EcoBoost paint jobs too....

And then, there are other guys who run well here like Denny Hamlin, maybe a Kyle Busch turn around... the MWR cars are doing well. I don't know how Bowyer and Truex will run here.... their team is just on fire and having a Cinderella year.

I put Brad Keselowski at the bottom of my favorites.... he doesn't have to pull out all the stops to win, but I suspect he would try to if he had the right car and right set up. In "traditional" years, the guy with a big lead going into the final race runs a conservative race, stays out of everyones way, and doens't upt himself in dangerous situations. However, Brad K and his guys are re writing the books on that kind of behavior. I wouldn't be surprised to see Brad K being himself and putting his car in contention to win since that's basically what got him to where he is!

The Ones to Watch

My first one to watch is the Richard Petty team... Allmendinger and hte 43 ran well here hwen they were Fords, And Almirola has been running well lately so we'll have to see... be cool if the 43 Ford won the final race of the year... be a story book ending!

The Hendrick cars have just never been the best at this place but, they have Kahne... and Jeff Gordon has nothing to lose but to go out and win the race and check off a track he has never won on. I think Gordon only has like two tracks on the schedule he has never won, this and Kentucky.... don't you knwo he'd like to make it just one so he can go pull out all the stops in Kentucky next year?

I think the Martin Truex team will try to close out the season by ending a winless streak too.

Tony Stewart had not been the best driver here for years, and then mysteriously started runnig well last year when he had to. He was the man when this place was flat but hte banking screwed him up. If he can carry on that Texas set up he was so fired up about, he could win here though.

Kevin Harvick might try to go out with a pair of wins. It's funny that whne guys start going into contract years, they start running well... so I suspect Harvick is going to drive like a bat out of hell.

Junior has never won here.... and he isn't that great at the ned of hte year so we'll have to see. I do'nt suspect he'll run perfecth ere.

Also, that 55 car from MWR hasn't won all year and they might go out and try to get a win for it, too.... the commentators siad they had some "mystery chassis" under the car at Phoenix... good for 10th place, but still.... might tweek on it for Homestead.

Menard has been running alrihgt recently too...

The Ones to Avoid

Montoya, McMurray, Burton, the usuals....

My Picks

Well... just off the top of my head......

1) Jimmie Johnson
2) Matt Kenseth
3) Aric Almirola

I'm still tinkering with this thread... thanks for your appreciation and I'm still on an emotional high from that win!! I'm still excited!! So glad I pulled off a win.....

I'm trying to get all the congratulatory stuff in.... I may do a double check of the points this week to make sure we really do have a 6 point difference going into Homestead...

Also, I would like a moderator to give us a poll for this thread.... I would like the quewstion to be:

"Who will be the MCF NASCAR Fantasy Champion for 2012?"

choices

Carl Martin (carlm54stl)
Mike Beck (03JGMonte)

With disclaimer, I was intoxicated with joy when I wrote this so I may have to straighten out the thread tomorrow... in the mean time....

Also guys, I did my "victory lane" videos... and now I am planning a "press conference" video following the win.... so if you have any questions for me, if I get enough, I'll make a press conference video....

So come up with some quesitons for me related to Phoenix! (besides should Bowyer get a penalty... two versions of that question out already)
