Picks/Dover/SundayAfternoon
I'M GOING TO DOVER!!!
For the third year in a row, I am traveling to Maryland for the weekend to join my former college roommate and his family for a weekend on the eastern shore of Maryland and a trip to Dover for the race.
Mr. 77GP Jerry, I'm going to leave you in charge.
If anyone would be so willing, would they please add up the race results? It will be several hours after the race and probably even Monday before I get around to it. If someone would be on tap to do the math, it would be appreciated.
Points, Intro, and Congratulatory Remarks
A big congrats to adgm2005, for winning a very tight showdown between a lot of us with similar picks in that race!! That was his first win for the Monte Carlo Forum NASCAR Fantasy League.
Defending Winner: JuniorCar, Brent needs to get some momentum going back his way after slipping to third overall in points. He led the points for a long time this season too!
The Overall Points are stretching out, congrats to Carl Martin for holding that lead with a sizable margin!

Dover History
This race was once known as the Mason-Dixon 300, and it was considered a superspeedway, being as it was 1 mile.
The first race here was July 5, 1969. Richard Petty, Dale Inman, Maurice Petty, and the crew ran the July 4 Daytona race, then had another car goign to Dover and flew up overnight. He was pretty much the only major team there, adn won the race quite convincingly in his 1969 Ford Torino Talladega. Ironically, it was his only superspeedway win of the year.
A reporter from the Virginia Pilot asked Richard in victory lane why he climbed thorugh the window instead of opening the door. Richard smiled, gave him that trademark wink and said "You're new, aren't you." That man went on to cover NASCAR races for many years though.
While the Torino dominated in '69, that Dodge whipped our buts in 1970. Petty won it again though.
This was always one of the better race tracks for Richard Petty. Here is a photo of Petty beating Donnie Allison by half a car length in 1979, on his way to his final Winston Cup championship.
It may be for this reason that Petty loved to have his cars run well at Dover. He is known for his success in Daytona, but he was good at Dover too.
This Week
Long green runs are the speciality. Dover is not known for them, but when I was there in 2010, we did run the last 99 laps under green with Kyle Busch winning.
We're going from a track though that had a lot of transition and change to a concrete track that doesn't change as much since for 1) it's a concrete surface and 2) it's an all afternoon race. It's more about fine-tuning and tweaking that car all race long.
The concrete Canyon Monster Mile will be an intersting race I believe. It is one of the last interesting races before we get to Pocono, Michigan, Sonoma, and Kentucky...... good snoozing at those race tracks!! However, two of them have fresh pavement....
CHEVROLET TEAMS
Hendrick Motorsports
Hendrick is good everywhere, and Jimmie is a master at Dover... but usually in the fall race. Jimmie usually gets his championship runs going at Dover. He is solid and consistent there. Jeff, Kasey, and Dale Jr all leave a lot to be desired if we're to be honest with ourselves though.
Stewart-Haas Racing
Although Stewart has won here, I think he leaves a lot to be desired. Stewart basically either wins or runs in the high teens-mid 20s range. I think this week will be more of the later. Newman will probably run better than Stewart if we're to be honest.
Richard Childress Racing
I would look for Happy Harvick to get another of his patented top 10s without making any noise. The rest of that team will probably run about average for themselves.
FORD TEAMS
ROUSH-FENWAY RACING
All the Roush cars are great here. The three even raced for the win between themselves here one year...
3 Car Roush Fenway Racing Battle For Lead In Final Laps Of 2008 Dover 400 - YouTube
I think Edwards is a little bit off and searching this year. I look for Kenseth and Biffle to both be solid and consistent at Dover though.
Petty Motorsports
Last year, they were good with Allmendinger til he blew up and gave me a last place finish in this race last year. This year, Ambrose may run well... but Ambrose just doesn't have luck on his side and never has really. IT's a shame, he's got a lot of talent.
TOYOTA TEAMS
Joe Gibbs Racing
Kyle Busch is really good at Dover. Denny Hamlin used to be crappy here, but has been good as of late and is 4th in points, running solidly. Joey is going to put up one of his regular finishes.
Michael Waltrip Racing
Two darkhorses here to watch out for. Clint Bowyer was in the hunt last year at this track, and he didn't get it. He is really better at Dover than people accredit him for. Plus, Martin Truex ran good here even on off years. I think Truex will be running great this weekend at Dover.
DODGE TEAM/PENSKE RACING
One and the smae. Allmendinger is so good at Dover, it is his best track... yet his luck and the way things are going for that team just mean nothing but trouble. He is a high risk pick in my opinion. Keselowski just keeps getting better and better as a driver, Penske has been patient, and he is collecting dividends on that kid right now. Look out for ol' BK as a darkhorse pick for this weekend.
MY PICKS
I've got to leave for dover before any practice. Just incase I get in a psot where I have no internet, I will go ahead and make some preliminary picks for this thing.
1) Greg Biffle, concrete solid at Dover
2) Martin Treux Jr, solid at Dover, team his so much better this year, and won't be denied.
3) Kyle Busch, solid right now, Dover suits him.

I'm gonna stick with what's gotten me where I am. I've picked these three drivers almost every week (except the debacle at Bristol and this last week where I actually gave up points by changing my pattern).
Biffle
Dale Jr
Harvick
Good thing I didn't drift too far from my pattern or I'd have fallen even farther back. But I can salvage this.

Here is a song to get stuck in your heads as you watch Dover.
This was THE song in Britain in WWII. One of my college professors was in Britain for the 50th anniversary for the ending of Britain and they played this song, and all these old people started crying and singing along with the song.
It was quite inspirational. And related to Dover.

Although I think this 10 year old did a better job with it on Britians got talent, if you go to about 1:45 she starts.

Jeff Burton actually has a descent average finish here surprisingly since 2010, 7.5. I didn't know he had finished that high in like 5 years at RCR.
And Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards have the best average finsihes, 4.75 and 5.25 respectively. But Edwards only won this place that one time in 2007 on a two tire change at the end that put him out in front.
Jimmie Johnson is the man, having like 6 career wins at Dover. Jeff Gordon has 4, but none since 1998. I think that was the last year this was a 500 miles race too.
