What a Darlington Win Would Mean For Me

A lot. I have not won a points paying race since the Bristol spring race last March. I won the Spring All Star Show down, which is the race after this, but it isn't a points race. So I want to break my winless streak oh-so-badly.

Also, I am graduation at 9:00 a.m. the morning of Darlington race. To win this race that evening and put a nice cap on it all would be really cool.

Plus, I'm scheduled to go run 5 laps at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday in Richmond... wrong track, but it would just mean a ton to me to get this done.

And to cap it all off, it's one of my favorite race tracks. I didn't like it very much as a kid, but I love Darlington now. I can't really tell you if it's my favorite track, it's hard for me to tell. It's either here, Charlotte, or Daytona. Maybe Martinsville.... kind of depends on how the mood strikes me.

Darlington History

I probably have more history stories from this track than any other.

It's not on YouTube, but the spring race at Darlignton in 1969 came down to a restart with about 6 laps to go, which was rare back then. Lee Roy Yarborough, driving the car in my avatar, crashed into Bobby Allison, who dominated the day. Allisons crash was a very fierce one, running int oa section of concrete head on. Yarborough had a pair of flat tires, but changed them. Cale Yarborough was on teh tail end of the lead lap, and due to the rules back then ,he was the first car behind the pace car, but Lee Roy was the leader. Lee Roy and allision had been the only drivers on the lead lap.

Here are the pictures of their crashed cars. The 98 won.

And in 1968, Cale Yarborough and David Pearson had crashed (lightly) with about 40-50 laps to go. No caution came out like it does today. Tehy were also the only cars on the lead lap. Both had to pit as a result, but Yarborough still held on by about a second to beat Pearson.

This was also the race where Richard Petty flipped a car, his head was hanging out teh window, and they mandated window nets as a result.

Pearson went on to win this race over Bobby Issac, who had some engine issues. PEarson was driving a '69 Ford. Pearson was not in contention for the '70 title because he had to have appendix surgery earlier in the year.
So much history.... so much talent it takes to run here. That's just the history of the years my Torino ran this race.

Prior to this, it was the race where Cale Yarborough went over the wall in a crash with Sam McQuagg.....

And I hear some female wannabehot shot who sold out to the perverts at GoDaddy might be running this race.

This week at Darlington

Veterans tend to run well at Darlington. You have to run hard, but you can't run so hard that the turn 2 wall. You've got to pace yourself, 500 miles at this place takes a long time. It's a great race track, a way different place than anywhere else we run. The teams with the good 1.5 mile programs may not be the ones to watch. That's basically what we run, but it's not necessarily the key to winning either.

Lots of guys want to win here really badly. Tony Stewart has never won here but really wants it. It's one of the couple of tracks he has never seen victory lane. Only 1 opportunity a year....

Hendrick Motorsports

Junior is good at Darlington, and those SC fans would love to see Junior win! I do believe his winless streak needs to end here in the south. Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon are great here too. Jeff Gordon has won this track more than any other active driver, and he crashed last year, but was running for a top 5! Gordon has had some terrible luck this year.

Last year, Kasey Kahne was dominating this race and now he has Hendrick equipment. Kahne seems to have turned his luck aorund in the last few weeks, so I've got my eye on Kahne!

Stewart-Haas Racing

Tony Stewart runs good here some years, and he has never won. Only a few races he hasn't won on the circuit, and Darlington is one. I don'tk now what to say about Newman... look for him to run like crap. Newman wins his 1-2 races a year and runs like crap everywhere else.

Richard Childress Racing

The bloodlust between Harvick and Busch has been played by the media a ton. Back to where it all happened! Menard may run okay, and Burton is a savvy veteran with terrible luck. I just don't see much swagger in that team this year.

Roush Fenway Racing

Biffle has won this track twice. I think he will run great here again. His teammates have never won. I think they will all be trying hard. Edwards was one of the dominant cars here last year and was robbed by Regan Smith!! Kenseth is consistent, knows when to race, and may just win this thing! I think this team has a lot of swagger right nowtoo!

Petty Motorsports

That team is probably going to run like crap, I'll be brutally honest. AJ was the rock over there.

Penske Motorsports

Keselowski ran great here last year. Seems like the fuel pick up problems may be behind this team. It's one of the tracks he picked up on pretty well. Hard to say what ol' AJ might do. He just hasn't found his stride at Penske.

Joe Gibbs Racing

I think Kyle Busch just drives too hard to be there at the end at Darlington. It just doesn't suit his style. Hamster is hard to gauge this year.

To be honest, I'm not really paying a lot of attention to this team this year.

Michael Waltrip

When I think Darlington, I don't really think of any Toyotas. The strong southern heritage here just doesn't appreciate those 'Yotas. And when I think Darlington, I don't think Bowyer or Truex. Will Mark Martin be back in the car? If so, he knows how to get'er done at Darlington. He's the only Yota I would even pay credence to this year at Darlington, unless practice shows otherwise.

My Picks

I'm not oging to make them yet!! I'm torn between Kasey Kahne, Carl Edwards, Greg Biffle, Matt Kenseth, Tony Stewart, Brad Keselowski, and Jeff Gordon. I'll figure out which of those I want after looking over some statistics more, or maybe waiting for practice and qualifying rounds.

Good luck, and enjoy Darlington.

I'm gonna go with what's got me here so far. I may change this if practice indicates differently though.

They claim this picture is from teh 1969 Southern 500.... it was rain shortened, rained during the afternoon, track was dry, and NASCAR cut the distance. Looks more like Charlotte to me though... maybe even Atlanta.

Darlington has that distinct upper grove, which is absent from this picture. Plus, I don't think Darlington has all those trees around it.

and for all my "should coulda wouldas" I forgot to post my historic NASCAR 1968-1969 Martinsville pictuers for Martinsville, and I forgot to post this picture of the 1969 inaugural race at Texas International Speedway at college Station, Texas. The track had problems getting fnas to come in and went defunct in the 90s. Greg Biffle did some testing here several years ago.... place just fell to the wayside.

Lee Roy Yarbrough in the white Torino won the race, Pettys Torino can be seen in the background along with Bobby Allisons Charger Daytona.

It was a 2 mile oval, a bit like Michigan.

And here is a picture of my hero, David Pearson, in victory lane at Darlington in 1968!!!

Pearson won the Rebel 400 driving a '68 Torino with a smaller 396 c.i.d engine in it. All the other Ford teams ran the larger 427. However, the Holman-Moody team decided to run a lighter engine for a better weight balance. It paid off with a win, with an underpowered car, but a better handling one that cornered better and didn't wear right front tires as fast. The other Ford teams caught on, and Yarborough won the Southern 500 running a 396.

The next year, with the 429 Boss engines, everyone opted to run the larger 429.

They don't. They need to borrow some of Tony Stewart's deodorant.

seems lately if I pick a hot or top driver they are sure to goof it up. So to help my prediction of Jr. falling apart.
