Track Talk for the weekend of January 29 - 31
THE BIG STORY
Rolex Sports Car Series
THE BIG STORYA team that didn't exist a few weeks ago won last weekend's Rolex 24 at Daytona International Speedway. Mike Rockenfeller, Terry Borcheller, Joao Barbosa and Ryan Dalziel teamed in a Porsche Riley. The Action Express team was formed after Brumos cut back to one car. Justin Wilson - driving with Scott Pruett, Memo Rojas and Max Papis -- was leading with three hours to go when he heard what he thought was a car problem and pulled in to the garage. The crew found nothing wrong with the BMW Riley, but Pruett was unable to make up the one lap difference. He finished just over 50 seconds behind. Hurley Haywood, in what he said was his last race, finished 26th.
Also: NASCAR reduced the fees tracks will pay for Cup, Nationwide and Truck races, meaning less prize money . . . Robby Gordon named Iain Watt as his No. 7 Cup Toyota crew chief . . . Rolex Sports Car SeriesJimmie Johnson had a crash in the No. 99 Chevrolet-Riley during Thursday practice at Daytona, requiring extensive overnight rear-end repairs. Max Angelelli grabbed the pole with a 127.108 mph lap in his Ford-Dallara. There were 44 starters. Due to rain, the first five laps Saturday were run under full-course yellow. The grouping of Juan Pablo Montoya, Dario Franchitti, Scott Dixon and Jamie McMurray led 139 of the first 247 laps until engine problems sidelined them after eight hours. Joao Barbosa, powered by a privately developed V-8 Porsche, took the lead with about three hours to go and completed 755 laps and averaged 111.930 mph. The BMW Riley of Ryan Hunter-Reay, Lucas Luhr, Richard Westbrook, Scott Tucker and Christophe Bouchut was third but four laps down. Angelelli and team were sixth after contact with the pit wall. Jimmie Johnson, teamed with Alex Gurney, Jon Fogarty and Jimmy Vasser, wound up 21st. In the GT class, Nick Ham, Sylvain Tremblay, Jonathan Bomarito and David Haskell won in a Mazda RX-8 and were eighth overall.
