Cool NASCAR + more Rac'in: 3.22.10

THE BIG STORYJimmie Johnson won his 50th Cup race - and first at Bristol Motor Speedway - in Sunday's Food City 500. Johnson tied Ned Jarrett and Junior Johnson for 10th on the all-time Cup winners list. He passed Tony Stewart after a late restart and finished .894 second ahead. Kurt Busch, who led 278 laps, was third. Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth completed the top five. It was the last scheduled race for Cup cars using the rear wing as a more traditional spoiler will be in place this Sunday at Martinsville. Kevin Harvick (11th) is one point ahead of Kenseth.
Also: NASCAR's Talladega test with the spoiler replacing the rear wing drew 24 teams and the restrictor-plate size was reduced to 31/32 inch . . . A new rule for the Sprint All-Star race will be a mandatory four-tire pit stop before the last 10-lap segment. The restart order will be set by the order the cars leave the pits . . . Ryan Truex, 18, will drive six Nationwide events for Michael Waltrip's team . . . Brandon Bernstein has a new crew chief, Todd Smith, replacing Rob Flynn and assistant Mike Guger . . . Team owner Jim Hayhoe, best known for bringing Jimmy Vasser into Indy Car racing, died at age 74 . . . Joey Saldana and Jason Meyers won World of Outlaws features in Tennessee . . . Drivers Larry Pearson and Charlie Glotzbach were injured in Saturday's Showdown legends race at Bristol. Pearson spun in the closing laps and was T-boned by Glotzbach. Pearson, 56, a two-time NASCAR champion and son of triple Cup champ David Pearson, had surgery to repair a compound fracture of his lower left ankle. He also has a fractured hip and right wrist. Glotzbach, 71, also was hospitalized and listed in good condition. Rick Wilson won.

NASCAR Sprint Cup SeriesJoey Logano won the pole Friday with a 124.630 mph lap. At 19, he became Cup's youngest pole winner. Dave Blaney qualified third, but as a start-and-park entry, dropped to the rear. Kurt Busch led the opening lap Sunday before Logano passed him. Jimmie Johnson took the lead on lap six. Blaney stopped on-track with a flat tire on lap 41. Brad Keselowski, who started 36th, didn't pit to gain track position. Clint Bowyer caused a yellow with a blown engine. Several teams had problems with right-front tires during long green-flag runs. Logano had a flat on lap 110 and finished 27th. David Reutimann was as high as second before an engine problem. Denny Hamlin had a flat tire and then rain showers forced a yellow. Greg Biffle took first after the restart and then Juan Pablo Montoya went ahead. Kasey Kahne got into the wall on lap 204. With 237 laps left, Kyle Busch hit the wall with a flat tire and brother Kurt led out of the pits. After another yellow, Dale Earnhardt Jr. got a pit lane speeding penalty while running fifth, and finished seventh. There was a 13-car accident on lap 342, triggered when Biffle had contact with Mark Martin. Logano, Jeff Gordon, Montoya, Carl Edwards, Kevin Harvick and Ryan Newman were among those with damage. There was another rain shower and, again, Keselowski didn't pit. With 85 laps to go, Kurt Busch passed for the lead. But with 18 laps left, debris brought out a yellow. Kurt Busch and Jimmie Johnson took four new tires while Biffle, Matt Kenseth, Edwards and Tony Stewart went with new right-side tires only. The green waved with 10 laps left. Stewart passed Biffle but then Johnson used better traction to gain the spot on Stewart. Johnson, winner of three of the first five races this season, averaged 79.618 mph with 10 yellows for 103 of the 500 laps.

NASCAR Nationwide SeriesJustin Allgaier passed Penske Dodge teammate Brad Keselowski with 27 laps to go and held-on by .178 second to claim his first series victory in Saturday's Scotts Turf Builder 300 at Bristol. Keselowski, the pole winner, got inside Allgaier a couple of times in the closing laps but couldn't make a clean pass. Kyle Busch was third. Kevin Harvick spun Joey Logano on the last lap. There was a red when a multi-car accident tangled Colin Braun and Steve Wallace. Allgaier averaged 76.609 mph with 11 yellows for 61 laps. Carl Edwards (fourth) leads Keselowski by 26 points.

American Le Mans SeriesWith Audi not entered and only minimal P1 class opposition from Aston-Martin, Peugeot finished 1-2 in Saturday's 12 Hours of Sebring. Alexander Wurz, Marc Gene and Anthony Davidson finished almost 14 seconds ahead of diesel-powered teammates Sebastien Bourdais, Nicolas Minassian and Pedro Lamy. Adrian Fernandez, Stefan Mucke, and Harold Primat were third in the Aston-Martin. The winners completed 367 laps. In P2, Greg Pickett, Klaus Graf and Sascha Maassen won in a Porsche RS Spyder. In GT2, the Ferrari F430 GT of Jaime Melo, Gimmi Bruni and Pierre Kaffer won. The factory Corvettes collided on pit road. Two new classes debuted: In LMPC, Scott Tucker, Christophe Bouchut and Mark Wilkins won in an Oreca. In GT Challenge, Butch Leitzinger, Juan Gonzalez and Leh Keen won in a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. There were 34 total starters. Jon Field was released from a local hospital after a pre-race testing crash in which his P1 car flipped. The team plans to return at Long Beach.

Racer of the WeekJustin Allgaier. Wins his first Nationwide race in a clean battle with teammate Brad Keselowski. It was his 43d start.
