THE BIG STORY

Sprint Cup went road racing for the first time this season in Sunday's Toyota/Save Mart 350k at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., won by Kasey Kahne. His Dodge became the leader on lap 80 of the event that went extra laps, to 113, due to a late yellow when Scott Speed spun. Tony Stewart was second, followed by Marcos Ambrose, Jimmie Johnson and Denny Hamlin. It was the first win for Richard Petty as an owner since John Andretti's victory at Martinsville in 1999. Stewart leads Jeff Gordon (ninth) by 84 points.
Also: Johnny Benson was released from a Michigan hospital after a supermodified race crash… Trip Bruce, who was Benson's Truck series crew chief, is now chief for Steve Wallace's Nationwide team… Goodyear completed its seventh tire test at Indianapolis in preparation for next month's Allstate 400 and Jeff Gordon said he was satisfied that last year's tire-wear problems won't happen again… Donny Schatz won Friday night's World of Outlaws feature at River Cities Speedway in North Dakota while Jason Meyers was the winner Saturday night in West Fargo.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series

Brian Vickers got the pole Friday at Sonoma with a 93.678 mph lap in his Toyota. Marcos Ambrose qualified third but an engine change sent him to the back. Scott Speed didn't qualify but took over Joe Nemechek's car. Vickers led the first 17 laps but finished 16th. Jeff Gordon got a pit-lane speeding penalty and had to restart at the back of the field. As usual on road courses, track position and pit sequencing were key. Denny Hamlin led 33 laps in the mid-section of the event. In the first test of double-wide restarts on a road course, Tony Stewart got to line up alongside leader Kasey Kahne after several cautions, but Kahne's No. 9 Dodge always was able to lead. Kahne led a total of 38 laps. There were seven yellows for 20 laps. It was his first-ever road course win after a previous best of 14th (twice) and Kahne's first win in 37 events, going back to Pocono last June. Dale Earnhardt Jr. was involved in a three-car late-race tangle and finished 26th. Reed Sorenson qualified 28th and finished 40th in the Valvoline Dodge.

He finished fifth while Castroneves was seventh. Franchitti averaged 134.371 mph with five yellows for 46 laps. Briscoe leads Franchitti by three points.
