LOS ANGELES -- Jimmie Johnson, driver of the No. 48 Lowe's Chevrolet, picked up the ESPY for Best Driver during the 17th annual ceremony Wednesday at the Nokia Theater L.A. Live.

This marks the second year that Johnson has won the award, which is based upon a fan vote. Johnson, the three-time defending Cup Series champion, also was nominated for Best Male Athlete, which was presented to 14-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps.
NASCAR has dominated the Best Driver category, picking up 11 of the last 14 awards. Johnson's Hendrick Motorsports teammates have won five of them: Jeff Gordon in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2007, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. in 2004.

Kyle Busch won on a non-Sprint Cup weekend, taking Saturday night's Nationwide Series event at Gateway International Raceway, near St. Louis. It was his first victory at that track. Reed Sorenson was second and Carl Edwards third. Busch upped his advantage over Edwards to 212 points.
Also: Four-time Champ Car champion Sebastien Bourdais is out of the Toro Rosso Formula One team… Donny Schatz won Saturday night's $50,000 World of Outlaws Kings Royal at Eldora Speedway… Martin Truex Jr. and car owner Teresa Earnhardt got points penalties as the No. 1 Chevrolet was found with a rear quarter-panel height violation after Chicagoland… Simona De Silvestro won the Atlantic Series race at Lime Rock.

In the Missouri-Illinois Dodge Dealers 250 at Gateway, Kevin Harvick led 92 of the first 150 laps in his Chevrolet. But Harvick ran out of fuel, putting Kyle Busch's Toyota up front on lap 172. He stayed there through the lap-200 checkered flag, beating Reed Sorenson's Toyota by one second. It was Busch's sixth series victory of the season and his first at Gateway. He averaged 103.286 mph with seven yellows for 34 laps. Steve Wallace was penalized one lap following an incident with Scott Legasse Jr.

Ron Hornaday Jr. won Saturday's Built Ford Tough 225 at Kentucky Speedway by .135 second over Mike Skinner. Hornaday, in a Chevrolet, benefited from several yellows in the last 20 laps that allowed him to gain positions on restarts. Matt Crafton, despite a penalty, was third. Hornaday led 29 of the 150 laps and averaged 121.933 mph with seven yellows for 30 laps. His margin over Crafton is 96 points.

NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series
Sunday's Northwest Nationals, near Seattle, ended with Tim Wilkerson, Antron Brown and Mike Edwards in the winner's circle. In Funny Car, Wilkerson's Ford Mustang won for the first time this season, with a 4.211 second, 291.01 mph vs. Tony Pedregon's 4.283, 289.57 mph in a Chevrolet Impala. Jack Beckman qualified 14th in the Valvoline/MTS Dodge Charger and lost in the second round. Ron Capps leads Ashley Force Hood by 21 points. In Top Fuel, Brown ran 3.985, 301.07 mph against Tony Schumacher's 3.990, 300.00 mph. Brown is 137 points ahead of Schumacher. In Pro Stock, Edwards' Pontiac GXP clocked 6.583, 211.03 mph to Jason Line's 6.601, 210.50 mph in a GXP. Ron Krisher qualified sixth in the Valvoline Chevrolet Cobalt and made it to the semifinals. Jeg Coughlin Jr. is 20 points clear of Edwards.

Alex Gurney held off Scott Pruett by .759 second to win Sunday's Porsche 250 at Alabama's Barber Motorsports Park. Gurney, co-driving a Pontiac-Riley with Jon Fogarty, won for the third time this season. They started on the pole and led 85 of the 109 laps. Pruett was in a Lexus-Riley with Memo Rojas. Third in the Daytona Prototype class were Michael Valiante and John Pew in a Ford-Riley. Gurney, Fogarty, Pruett and Rojas are tied for the championship lead. In GT, Robin Liddell and Andrew Davis won in a Pontiac GXP.

American Le Mans Series
Leader David Brabham had a flat tire with 13 minutes to go, allowing Simon Pagenaud to lead the rest of the way in Saturday's two-hour, 45-minute Northeast Grand Prix at Connecticut's Lime Rock Park. Pagenaud and Gil de Ferran have won three straight in their P1 class Acura. Brabham, co-driving with Scott Sharp, had gotten the lead by taking just two new tires on what was scheduled to be his last stop. In P2, Mazda won for the first time since 2005, as the Dyson Lola of Butch Leitzinger and Marino Franchitti got the class victory. In GT2, Patrick Long and Jorg Bergmeister won in a Porsche 911 GT3 RSR. In the Challenge class, Bob Faieta and Wesley Hoaglund won in a Porsche 911.
