NASCAR would be open to more foreign involvement >>?
By David Caraviello, NASCAR.COM
June 14, 2009
BROOKLYN, Mich. -- As domestic manufacturers pull back on their racing programs because of bankruptcies and falling automotive sales, might NASCAR look to more foreign carmakers to fill the gap?
Restructuring
General Motors is cutting factory support for Chevrolet teams competing in the Nationwide Series and Camping World Truck SeriesSeries chairman Brian France hinted Sunday at Michigan International Speedway that it might be a possibility, and that very preliminary discussions with certain carmakers have been held to that effect. Toyota is currently the only non-American-based manufacturer competing in NASCAR, although the models used in competition are made in the United States.
"We have been talking to people off and on for a long time," France said. "These are decisions in terms of a new manufacture joining the sport that would take a long time to evaluate and actually enter, so that's not something we turn the light switch on and that would happen. But we are the preeminent place in North America for car manufacturers to build their business with an auto racing group. We remain that. And clearly there are some companies that are going to look at opportunities that may not have been there in the past that may be there in the future."
Those companies would be held to the same stipulation Toyota was, in that they must build their competitive models in the U.S. "It is under a very clear set of circumstances that manufacturers come to NASCAR to compete, and that would not change," France said.
General Motors is withdrawing its support of NASCAR's Nationwide and Camping World Truck divisions. The parent company of the Chevrolet brand is undergoing a bankruptcy restructuring.
"I'm very confident they'll be in the sport for many, many years, because it works well," France said. "But obviously, under different terms."

Mark Martin rocks! He always was my favorite and this years he's the guy who gets to humble Kyle Busch. If he can get 3 more wins this year I don't think I'll have a choice - I'll have to buy an Impala and "number 'er up"!

Braun, Logano and Martin Lead When it Counts Most
By John Singler
MRN News Director
Between them, Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson led a total of 370 laps over the weekend but came up empty in the win column. Colin Braun, Joey Logano and Mark Martin combined to lead just 47 laps, yet they were NASCAR’s big winners.
Martin was the leading man in a fuel-mileage drama Sunday at Michigan International Speedway (MIS), posting his third victory of the season in the LifeLock 400. In Saturday night’s Meijer 300 Nationwide Series race, Logano was victorious for the second year in a row at Kentucky Speedway. And Braun delivered Roush Fenway Racing’s 50th victory in the Camping World Truck Series with his Saturday win in the Michigan 200.
In Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at MIS, a side-by-side duel for the lead less than 10 laps from the finish forced Johnson and Greg Biffle to use more fuel than either wanted to with the win hanging in the balance. Moments later, first Johnson and then Biffle ran his tank dry – opening the door for Martin to claim the victory.
With all of the front-runners being cautioned to conserve fuel in the closing laps, Martin managed his better than anyone else – although he, too, ran out of gas but not before coasting across the finish line nearly three seconds ahead of Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon. For Martin, it was his 38th career win and fifth at MIS. Sunday’s success also lifted Martin from 13th to 8th in the Sprint Cup Series standings with 11 races remaining before the 12-man championship field is set.
Biffle hung on for fifth place but Johnson faded to 22nd, a bitter end to the day that saw him dominate. After starting third, Johnson rolled out to a lead that grew as large as seven seconds in the early going. He had almost half of the 43-car field one lap down a third of the way through the race. Johnson led 146 of the 200 laps, but it was the one lap Martin led at the end that carried the day.
Saturday night at Kentucky Speedway, Logano passed Busch less than 10 laps from the finish, becoming the first driver in the nine-year history of the race to have multiple wins. Logano’s final margin of victory was more than 1.5 seconds over Busch – with Brad Keselowski, Brendan Gaughan and Justin Allgaier completing the Top Five.
NASCAR issued 27 pit-road speeding penalties during the night, including one to Logano during the first half of the race that gave him time to recover and rally back to the front. Busch led 162 of the 200 laps and despite being denied the victory, he did extend his lead in the championship standings to 137 points over Carl Edwards – who suffered three pit-road speeding penalties and finished 20th.
Braun’s first career win in the Camping World Truck Series also turned out to be a milestone victory for Roush Fenway Racing as the young driver delivered the organization’s 50th series win Saturday afternoon. Braun, the 2008 Rookie of the Year and just 20 years old, drove past Busch and led the final 24 laps in delivering Ford’s first victory of the season.
Braun’s margin of victory was nearly two seconds over Busch, who led 62 of the 100 laps. Series leader Matt Crafton finished fourth and bumped his lead over Ron Hornaday to 39 points.
