I've been following NASCAR since I was born back in 92 but recently the other day a thought popped into my mind that I've had only a few times before. Why did they change the Monte Carlo body style on the cars in 2003? Previously from 2000-2002 the Monte Carlo had headlight decals that fully resembled the street version and they even had those famous curved rear decklids and spoilers. However in 2003 they changed the front bumper of the car as well as the headlight decals which were much fatter and the whole rear including having a wave free spoiler. My question is why? Was it to make the car even more or less competitive? Was it because Chevy was told by Nascar to change it (as with the previous car Ford had claimed it had an aerodynamic advantage)? Maybe I'm forgetting a case but I can't remember a manufacturer changing the whole appearance of a racecar when they didn't change the appearance of the street car. The 2000-2002 version was a perfect match to the street version. The 2003-2005 version not so much. Why?

 

It was probably for one of hte reasons you mentioned. NASCAR used to have a different template for every manufacturer. Then they said manufacturers were getting unfair advantages... so they started moving them closer and closer in the late 90's/early 2000's. It could have been that Chevy went back to the wind tunnel and decided the newer body cut the air a little better. Hard to say.
