That brings back memories for me....
Our sportsman cars looked almost exactly like that!
When we use to race at Mt Clemens speedway! which is no longer there and they built Gibraltar Trade ctr North..in its place!
Can you imagine running a Vega Today? They did have a cosworth motor.
That be like trying to run a AMC Gremlin in a Truck race!

Classic NASCAR Photo of the Day.... anybody remember when bug eyed cameras got popular in the early 70's?
Here is a shot from the flag stand of the start of a 1970 race at Michigan.....

They actually still use them, but not to this extreme. That's how they do victory lane shots and the such. If you took your camera to victory lane, you would find you have to be like 15-20 ft from the car to get the whole car and background in a shot. Tehir cameras, with the fisheye, can be a few feet from a car and get the whole scene... tehy can be within a couple of feet of the driver and be able to see the drivers face, the whole car, the Miss Sprint Cup girl, and all that fun stuff in one shot.....
SEriously, try to get what they get in a single camera shot...

Ones a plymouth road runner.(superbird)
The others a charger. (Daytona) both have the nose price and the huge wing.
The difference is:
1 is made by plymouth
2nd is made by dodge.
Same design 2 different manufacturers.
Thus:
Daytona charger
Superbird roadrunner
