Gordon Slips Into Reverse at Wrong Time

NASCAR is holding a two-front war, using two different kinds of cars and two means of determining the standings, one of which has now been rendered virtually meaningless.

That's the forecast for the Chase for the Nextel Cup, scheduled to begin its 10-race run on Sept. 16 in Loudon, N.H. Get The Weather Channel on the line. This might as well be a hurricane, churning relentlessly through the Caribbean.

The season-long favorite, Jeff Gordon, has won four championships in the past, all when the system was sane. After three straight finishes worse than 18th, Gordon still leads by an insane 317 points over Tony Stewart. Well, not necessarily insane. More like irrelevant.

Those points mean nothing except that their ranking determines which 12 drivers make the Chase. Dale Earnhardt, 13th in spite of a fifth-place California Speedway finish on Sunday night, has about as much chance to make up the 128 points that separate him from Kevin Harvick and 12th place as a tsunami has of swamping Dallas.

Jimmie Johnson's California victory was his fifth, and that's one more than Gordon. That means Johnson, who trails Gordon by 430 points in the standings, will begin the Chase -- where the contestants are ranked on the basis of wins, not points -- with at least 5,050 points. Gordon will have to win the final regular-season race, at Richmond on Saturday night, to match Johnson's 5,050.

Four hundred thirty points down the drain.

Gordon is slumping, not at the worst time but at a bad one. He has two weeks to regain his form. These final races before the Chase don't mean much. Only the victories matter, but Johnson's latest victory has to be disquieting to Gordon. The dominant driver of the season, at least in terms of consistency, is no longer the leader, as a practical matter, because points are no longer relevant.

"We'd like to be running better and be out there, getting bonus points, but this team is going to come with a whole different focus and attitude when we get to New Hampshire," Gordon said. "I'll be honest. It's kind of hard to be in this position, because you're in a position where it really doesn't matter; and yet you're a competitor. ... But you know, in the back of your mind, that it really doesn't mean anything. I'm a little disappointed in some of the things we've had happen to us, but at the same time, I'd rather have them happen to us now than in those final 10 races."
