Timing Chain 05 SS
I've searched... maybe I missed something, but my 05 SS left me on the road today :-( had it towed, and I'm being told the timing chain broke... ( $2,000 before other items are found, is what I've been told) And yes i have an inter cooler, headers, non stock cam or injectors... ETC.... I just didn't have time & rented a car to make my work schedule work...
I was told timing chain broke and "we aren't sure what else" when we dig in, and estimate is $2,000... If I make $50 / hour, I guess I can take next week off...
If I remember, cradle has to be dropped for this... What's reasonable guys???

For the timing chain my biggest concern would be that it's a interference engine. I remember doing a few a long time ago and all had valve issues. Maybe GM changed them since then but I would guess they haven't. Good luck.

Sounds like they're gouging you big time. It's a couple hundred in parts and the engine can be pulled out the top. This should be less than a days work for a good mechanic.
Any chance you can DIY it? You'd save a ton of money in this case. Even of the engine was toast, you could drop another in from the JY and still be well under what they're quoting.

If you can do yourself it'll save tons. Here's a few questions that'll might help you decide. How good was it running before incident happened ? Was mileage low ? Does it make sense to put heads on the engine if there bad or would it be more cost effective to swap engines with new or used ? Its about 5 or 6 hours to do a chain and possibly more if valve bent there's 4-6 more hours or 13 to 15 to swap a motor.. Yes you can do some testing to see if parts are good . Can go more into that if you like but it also takes time.

2K is WAY too much for timing chain... bad time of year for me, or I would seriously be the DIY... can take a week off of work for that... and NO way is it going to take like 4+ days... 2K is highway robbery / book value... IMO

If it were my car I would find a used engine off Craigslist .I'm not sure if the supercharged is a different engine. (Bumpin96) is the expert on that. But if it's not a used 3800 goes for around $400-$800 and you swap intakes can be done over a weekend . I have done it more than once. The price is so high is because labor is $125 ish per hour. Hopefully bumpin96monte chimes in and lets you know if there's a difference. Good luck.

timing chain back on... pin broke on the double roller that i had on there :-( I was not lucky, got valve problems... pulled the heads.. Pistons look good, which is nice; Heads are on the way over to the machine shop. Got some new inter-cooler gaskets ordered, I'll need new exhaust ones too, hmm are they standard for traditional exhaust vs. headers... off to dig through the forms... oh the joys... :-)
