TH200-4R Rebuild options
Hey guys, I'm getting ready to rebuild my tranny and was just weighing my options.. I have been browsing the web and come across a few rebuild kits but not sure what one to go with.. I would like to go with the package that comes with the torque converter but if its a just rebuild kit I don't want to waste my time.

Also, I know its not really possible to diagnose a transmission over the net but... 1, 2, 3, and work great but I don't have OD or Reverse. I should be repaired with any of these rebuild kits, right? I have already spoken to abguy that will allow me to buy parts and only pay for the labor.

Hello,
About 9 years ago the transmission in my 85 SS went bad because of a driveshaft that caused the rear of the transmission to crack. Car is stock. It was just one of those weird events. Later it was found that my driveshaft might have been defective since new, but took close to 20 years to fail. I had no choice but to replace the tranny and the shop upgraded the torque converter and certain other internals while keeping the original gear ratios for the 4 speed auto.
To make a long story short, in my experience, if parts of a tranny are not working, like reverse, make sure everything is gone over with a fine tooth comb because of metal fragments in the fluid.
I am no expert, but when friends had done partial rebuilds, changed gears, etc without checking everything, eventually a failure occurred.
When my car was 3 months old the torque converter failed because of a fluid flow problem. Tranny was flushed, new converter as well as other parts and never had an issue again. Lucky it was still under warranty. If not for the driveshaft failing the original tranny might still be ok. I changed the fluid and filter every few years. Never saw anything funky in the pan.
Just take your time and ask some trusted mechanics about your ideas and choices. Last thing you want is to be on a flat bed truck watching your money going down the drain.
Good luck.

That when reverse Fails... Its a definite sign that your going to have to rebuild the complete transmission... generally a "soft" rebuild should cure the problem. I'm not sure if you have yours built up or is its still a stock driveline motor etc... then a standard soft rebuild may be in order. if its stock.... If yours "is" built for performance.... Then you may need an upgraded rebuild to handle the power and torque....
