Default Starter problems

I have a 99 Z34 3.8l with the coolant elbows issue. Ive got the parts to fix,now the starter is giving me problems. It turns over great, just sounds like the solenoid is not disengaging and grinding on the flywheel. Is pulling the starter a pita or not? Im hoping to replace only the solenoid to save a few bucks as a starter is $169. The starter was replaced at the stealership maybe 3 years ago.
I bought the car from my brother after he replaced it and I dont think the warranty is transferable.
Is replacing just the solenoid a good idea? Thanks for any info. Muley

The starter should come off pretty easily. check craigslist you may be able to find some one parting out something with a 3800. They are very popular.
