speedometer/shifting issue
Hello all, been a while since ive been here.
3.8 seized up in December w/ 171,xxx miles... just got a certified used engine swapped in today n shes running great again! buuut......
noticed it was low on tranny fluid at the shop, topped it off. took it for a drive, and immediately noticed the speedometer wasnt working. Then noticed some erratic shifts. rpms would run high, then itd lurch into gear. had a code i believe it was p0502
After a little research, i think its the vehicle speed sensor. Any advice is welcome, and a picture of its location would really help. Thanks everyone!

Hello all, been a while since ive been here.
It's been awhile since anyone could answer your thread (?)..
1. How many miles on your certified used engine ?
2. Who did the install ?
3. Does your certification cover the issues that you are having...
4. You think it might be Code 502 (?)
5. Can you get it read to be sure ?
6. It's difficult for a member to help with the information posted. It's difficult many times to just diagnose a problem online. (We hope to build a crew of member's that can run to your home & help, but we haven't been able to do that in the last ten years that I've been here
.I don't know how adding trans fluid could cause the issues you posted, but just about anything is possible...
Look forward to your updates and more detailed information.....Good Luck on getting it running good again
its been awhile since ive been on MCF, i meant ( good ol life stuff)
for record, car is a 2000 ss monte..
1: 150,410 miles
2: I did the swap at my buddies shop
3:No, warranty only covers engine block and head internals
4:got a code for p0502 (i think) it said speed sensor output low voltage
5:i have a scanner
6: I knew the exact symptoms and had code information, with that i was looking for a picture or explanation of where the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) was located.
Long story short, i figured it out... if you turn the steering wheel all the way to the left, then lay on ground and look behind right tire, you will see a pigtail connector near the oil filter. Then look immediately at the axle, and as you will see there is a pigtail connector on the axle just a little bit father down. That is the VSS! responsible for not only the function of the speedometer, but also in regulating shifting based on vehicle speed.
I simply had forgotten to reconnect it! Plugged it back in and the speedo works perfect, and the clunking, sloppy shifts went away completely.
I hope this can help somebody out there!
