Default Speedometer Only Problem

Hi, I'm new here and was wondering if I could get some help with a speedometer problem that just started today. I was driving today and looked down at my speedometer and it said I was going 20 mph, knowing I was going faster I sped up and it didn't react. About 5 min later it was reading 80mph. I stopped, turned the car off and then back on and nothing, it remained at 80mph. I continued driving and by the time I got home, about 2 min later, it was reading 135. It had slowly crept up and in no way moved suddenly or backwards. All of my other gauges are working correctly. I have heard it could be a gauge cluster problem but since it was only my speedometer acting up I wondered if it could possibly be something else. With my car off it reads at 135. About a week and a half ago I unplugged my battery to install a new stereo system, but I doubt that has anything to do with it. Any help would be appreciated, thank you. Bob
