I have a 1988 monte,4.3 V-6, and I want to swap it out for a SB pontiac 305 with tranny and the rear , can anyone please tell me the best way to go about converting everything over , and if it's possible to even do it. What is needed to be changed over . My monte has a throttle body and the motor from the TA has a carb.I was told that I'd need a inline fuel pressure regulator, and I'd hafta drop the pressure down to 7 1/2 PSI, is this correct......?also can the rear end work in my monte from the ta,? someone please have a knowlegable answer here , i'm not sure what to do.....

 

Have you done this already? what year is the T/A? If the 305 has a carb it should have the appropriate mechanical fuel pump on it to regulate fuel pressure!

As for the rear end they didnt change much, just jack up the monte and place the t/a rear under it and eyeball it, if it looks good "same width and leaf location" it will fit. if its still in the T/A just measure it out. depending on mileage of both cars and what kind of power you plan to one day get out of the 305 you might want to rebuild the Monte rear with the T/A diff.

When doing something like this its better to take the problems as they come then trying to make a plan, it will change quickly and often!

 

First of all Pontiac doesnt make a 305You are probably talking the GM 305 that was used in numerous vehicles.Give us more info,what year Pontiac are we talking? If its a newer generation it does not have leaf springs .It probably has a 7.5 rear end just like the monte carlo. More info needed to give you a better answer.

 

i decided togo with the 4.3 instead, only thing is the tranny is not an overdrive tranny as mine was , what do i need to do in order to make it work in my car, mine is an 88 with od. and the motor and tranny is out of a 1985 monte carlo without od......any feed back is much appreciated thank you....
