OK. got the new. guy found a new one for about 150. Im gonna go with stock. I just like driving the car I may upgrade to the aluminum one, I didn't even know you could get one. So it was the fuel pressure regulator its bad and has been spilling gas into the engine. Im told I was lucky I didn't hurt the lower intake manifold. I'm also told that's why I have had to replace the cat 3 times in 3 years as well. so She is gonna have a new manifold new fuel pressure regulator new cat new tires new breaks new power steering pump all together $800. I cant wait to drive her again. thanks for all your replies and hope I can get on here more often. I want to do a few mods nothing extream. Any one got a good site to purchase parts? thanks again everyone.

WOuldnt it be easier to do the aluminum intake and a catless downpipe. You will never have to worry about either again and those two aftermarket/used are gonna be cheaper.

Same thing just happened to me today. (I know this is an old post but oh well). Except my manifold blew to pieces and had to run for a fire extinguisher. Luckily, very little damage, just a sensor or two that has bad plugs now. So, is the safest assumption being the FPR? And where or how would I look up this aluminum intake?

Guess I should have mentioned, 2002 Monte Carlo SS, new cat about 1 year ago. Wasn't charging battery or anything, just turned the key to start. Been sitting 1 week, and has 38,000 miles on her.

Default Click! Click! Boom!

Hello forum, this is my first post on your site.

A couple of months ago my 2000 MC SS automatic gear shift broke off at the handle. Short on cash I drove a screw into the plastic to act as my thumb depresser when engaging gears. As long as I confirmed I was fully in park I must pull the screw all the way up, otherwise my battery goes dead. Ok...all is fine and about 3 weeks ago it wouldn't start. I carry a booster for just such events. Each day I boost it to start, no problems for less than a week and then a week ago this past Monday the booster wouldn't start it. I tried a few times for about an hour and decided to reconnect the electrical harness to my 1996 Suzuki Sidekick so I could get to work. Came home, again no start via booster. It sits. Then today after work I tried to start it again...I simply reached in and turned the key and it sounded like it wanted to clean start but a little weak. I paused about 5 seconds, turned the key again...without ever stepping on the gas pedal...and Click! Click! BOOM!

I see bright light and smoke, then flames. 15 seconds to "O.J. Simpson-it" to retrieve the fire extinguisher and calm the fire when I see my intake manifold in pieces all over the motor with the oil cap in the mix. Bewildered describes the look on my face and the lack of thoughts running through my head as I've never heard of anything like this. All I see are green dollar symbols evaporating into space.

Is this a result of pressurized excess fuel in the intake manifold with no place to go due to failed start attempts...possibly assisted by a potentially clogged catalytic converter?

I would include a picture but I don't know how to do that just yet.

All responses are greatly appreciated and God Bless you for taking the time.

Yes it is from a build up of gas in the manifold.
More than likely your fuel pressure regulator.

Since you are new to the forum I think you can't post until you reach a certain number of posts, but you can upload your pics to a place like photobucket.com and then post the link here

Ok then, obviously a common problem. Any forums doing a breakdown of parts and repair procedure? Am pretty knowledgeable with cars so no problem at my end. Have found an "updated" plastic manifold with coolant fittings on eBaY. My concern is the misc. wires that used to have plugs on them that used to plug into something. My fire was very small thanks to my own OJ jaunt to the extinguisher. I know she's rebuild able. Oh, and yeah, found my oil fill thingymajigger on the ground as well, with the oil cap still screwed in very nicely. And parts breakdowns? diagrams? GM Service manuals?
