How much milage do you have grandpa? I have 35,000kms and havent seen the issue. Yet. My malibu had it. Sounded like someone was hammering on the footwell with a 5 lb sledge. That involved an ISS and the entire rack. That malibu was terrible..
I have 36k miles.

They replaced the entire ISS at 21k miles

Is is possible that something wrong on the brakes would feed back through the steering column since the problem is prounounced during the activation and release of the brakes?

I dont know if that is the problem or not. It happens with either accelerating or decelerating. I am thinking I kinda screwed myself... the car has about 65k miles. So right around thet ime of a lease buyback. *braces for a world of small issues*

I believe I have the same issue....I hear a clicking sound and I feel its in the steering column. When I stop abruptly...or even turn a bit I hear a Click...Expecially when I put the car from D to R...Stoping short then putting car in R...not like a madman granted...Its like a Pop Click sound...if that makes sence... would this be the ISS???

I have a 2001 Monte SS and just had the ISS replaced with the new improved shaft and it did get rid of the "clunking" noise associated with the old shaft. The part number from my invoice (they replaced it under warranty) is 25829293. Hope you can get the word out and have this one problem corrected with this version of Monte Carlo. Good luck.

My rotors are warped, and my steering wheel does make a small grinding popping sound when I turn so it could be possible. I haven't taken my car in yet to find out.

Thanks for the great tip Mac. I've been putting off taking my 2000ss in for the 3rd. greasing/replacement. Went out and did the quick fix in about 25 minutes and test drove it and problem solved!

I took my car in today to get the steering shaft fixed it took them 8 hours to repair it. I'm glad it's covered by the warranty.
