Intake on 3.9
I've seen some people on here built there own Modular intake for the 3.9L on here. I was wondering if you could give me a hand finding the parts I need to put one on mine. I know Spectre sells the parts, but what do i do for the MAF sensor. It doesn't seem like the factory one comes out the the factory tubing. Help please

the MAF is about 3.5" so a 3.5" silicone coupler will work coming off the MAF, then to an aluminum pipe (3.5") then to the air filter. from the MAF to the throttle body you will need a 3.5 to 3 reducer since the TB is about 3'. then a 45 degree pipe to get to the TB. if you build one of these, i would highly recommend building an enclosed box for the air filter otherwise you are just sucking in all the hot air from the engine. MPD, Inc. makes a good product (fully enclosed insulated aluminum box). i just put one on my car a couple days ago.
Did you notice a difference in your 3.5L with the MPD intake box? Difference in engine sound? engine power? Where do you think the main difference comes from in this intake set up, is it from the new box and filter, or the new piping? How hard was installing the box? Your help is greatly appreciated.....
Thanks
Thanks
i did notice a big difference in the sound. it's a lot more of a throaty intake noise than stock, that's for sure, which i think sounds great when you get in the gas even a little bit. as for hp, there's a little more of a difference (for the better). when wide open throttle, i can notice more get up in the engine and a little more throttle response. MPG i haven't noticed much yet since i've had it installed for just a few weeks. I plan on getting a dual exhaust of some sort to compliment the intake. how do you like your magnaflow on your ride as far as sound/performance throughout the rpm range go?
i did have some fitment issues however. i went with a little more custom setup because the MPD intake is built to install with the stock intake piping to the MAF and TB. I already had some aluminum pipe and couplers so i thought i would try to get the maximum benefit of an unrestrictive intake. by doing that, i was limited on how i could get it to fit right. it didn't seal exactly right to the inner fender on one side of the intake box, so i got some closed cell foam from here at work and filled in the gap on one side and now it seals great and i'm getting just the cold air from behind the headlight.
if you want to do a cold air intake, do it right and buy or build some kind of enclosure that will allow you to suck only the COLD air from the outside and not all that hot engine air because you will just hurt your performance. if a get a chance this week i will post pics of what i have. hope this helps.

Sounds great! And yea pics would be awesome! I am really thinking about getting the box, because I agree that its pointless to do cold air without a box. It sounds like you had fitment issues because you used your own pipe vs. as keeping the stock set up? Is that right? I am undecided on whether to keep the stock rubber pipe, or change it....I'm thinking of buying the box, and deciding once I start install. The pipe from the box to the throttle body is only like 6" long, so i really don't know.
As for my exhaust, I love the sound of the Magnaflow. I had the single output stock, so I changed to dual output. I also did not want it overly loud on the highway, because I do ALOT of highway driving. So I had the stock resinator replaced with a 14" magnaflow resinator. The stock was an 18", and was not the glass pack. It has a nice gurggle when I back of the gas, and has a nice ton on the highway that is just in the background, but not annoying. When I punch it, its damn loud, and sounds good!

yes you are correct mamonte. that is why i had fitment issues.
i would like get either flowmasters or magnaflows in the future. i've heard good things about both. the magnaflow system is pretty rich for my blood so i'm thinking about getting it done at an exhaust shop with just the magnaflow mufflers and having them fab the rest.

thats exactly what I did, I took it to a muffler place I had been before, and had them create the system with the magnaflow mufflers and resinator. All together, out the door it was right around $400......I was looking to do Flowmaster too, because thats what is on my truck, and I like it, but the guy at the muffler shop recommended the Magnaflow for a V6. He said it had a more toned sound, and was less raspy/ crackly sounding then the flowmasters on a V6, so I took his advice, and i'm pleased with it....The Magnaflow mufflers are constucted the same way that Borla's are (a glass pack design) the Flowmasters have chambers...I guess the differnce in sound is preference. Most car people that hear my car can tell it has Magnaflows just by listening to it.
