My son took the dash cover off a 2001 to put a radio in.Had the key in the ignition and moved the shifter to remove the cover.Put the cover on put the shifter into park and pulled the key.put the key back in and now the key wont turn. The shifter is locked but the steering wheel isnt.Any help would be appreciated.

you somtimes can try to mess with it some and it will turn, Other wise it is time to get a new one.

what happens in our cars is with the cover you hit the key when you take it off and screw up the tumblers inside of it.
Some times they will turn but not easily other times they wont at all but both end up in the end with new parts.

next time you do this have a extra key cut. then take it to the grinder and grind it small enough to fit threw the hole on the dash with out hitting anything. then when you have to take the cover off use this key it wont hang up and tear up the ing. on your car.

just do like i said get a key and grind it down so it will fit threw the hole works great!!

I took my dash apart the first time seen this as a instant red flag and went and made the key.
but after that no issues at all from tearing apart my dash.i think my dash has been apart more times then teh miles listed on it LOL

I have doen alot with the car and seems most of it requiers to take the dash out to do it. Just wish i had a choice on weather or not to take the guage pod out by its self or the whole thing or the radio portion out alone. About to look in to cutting mine LOL

It's safe to take it apart, just make sure your key is not in the ignition when you do....

Mickey, I hear what your saying, but my key would fit and turn with no problem at all, it just would not send juice to the starter.

I also remember that it also locked out my shifter but i could turn the steering wheel.

now see that is funny, when i did my stereo it was done to mine the key shot out and hit the back seat LOL (thanks to teh moron helping me) any way i can pull the key out of my car now while it is running and it hangs up sometimes when your trying to start it.

So i have bitch to the factory about this so i get a new key. Have to love warrentys

They are not really happy right now anyway. the car has less then 10,000 worth or warrenty left and it will be gettign a new tranny and yet another sterring shaft in to it also.
The steering shaft they put in there has broken a bolt off an dnow rattels worse then the one they replaced.

So i have a big gift from big brown santa comming with my name on it from GM.

The tranny he said it was full of metal shavings and cant figure out where they came from . they have gone so far to pull the oil pan to find out if it cam from teh motor but they let me see it and could not say enough about how clean it was in there. Still looks brand new. all of the tolerences are good to.

we finally figured it out the tranny was tearing its self apart form tehinside out . they were thinking the pump came lose or somethign.

so we shall find out
