how to remove the shift knob

Default how to remove the shift ****

How do I replace the stock shifter **** on a 1987 Chevy Monte Carlo?

If the shifter is on the column, it should twist/pull off. If it is on the floor, there will probably be a small set screw holding it on.

It's on the floor and it has a plastic piece in front below the handle. I thought maybe using a flathead screwdriver and pushing down or up to see if it released it from the metal column.

It is very possible there is set screw under that plastic piece that secures the shifter ****. Be very careful because that piece is almost guaranteed to be brittle. Let us know what you find.
