Default Help Shift Gear Indicator

My 1988 SS has had a 700 R4 installed. Now the indicator in the dash display is not operating at all. The previous owner mentioned that he left a clip off in the dash. How is this indicator operated, and how do I access it? I have an 88 Service Manual from GM, but no information in there.

Thanks,
Barry

The clip is attached to a wire from your steering column to your gear indicator in your gauge cluster. You will have to loosen/remove the gauge cluster to find where the wire attaches to the gear indicator. Let me check my Chiltons manual to see if they show it in there. I will edit this post if it is. The Chilton's manual for these cars will pay for itself in a week!!!!

Thank you, does this include the floor shift models? I saw a reference about the indicator being tied to the column, but wasn't sure if the floor shifter was interfaced with the column. This car was specially ordered with a split bench seat. The former owner gave me the original seat, but replaced it with buckets and a console. I am not sure there is anything between the flood shift and steering column.

I will order the Chilton manual for if. I have the GM Service Manual for the 1988 Monte Carlo, but didn't find anything there other than that steering column to indicator reference.

Thanks again, Barry

Hmmm not sure about the floor shift models. Was the floor shift factory or after-market? If after-market, it might not be able to be operational with the indicator on the dash. Honestly, I don't even know how that works even if it was factory installed. Unless there is some way they could attach it to the shift linkage under the drivers side floor board.
Guess I will do some research on that tomorrow to see if I can find out...lol I would like to know how they would route that to even get it to work.

I've thought about rigging up something on the console. I usually know where I am, but it would be nice to have feedback. The shop manual I have is a 1988 and covers the 1988 Caprice and Monte Carlo. One thick book, a thinner one on electrical systems and a set of wiring diagrams. I've been thinking about removing the Holley and going to throttle body injection. It doesn't need more power, just better cold starting/running. 1st gear with 4 to 1 in the TH700R4 with the 3.73 positrac just burns tires. I have to ease it off, then at the 1-2 shift it will still spin the tires. Those Eagle GT IIs are no longer available. If I knew a good way to store them, I would put on Goodrich TAs for driving.

Thanks again
