I know its not a Monte, but my 85 Grand Prix (still a G-body) had the Idiot lights, and I replaced them with the gauge cluster and changed the sending units. Worked perfect! So thats all you should have to do.

I'd try one of 3 options if you don't want to tackle the factory SS gauge cluster.
1. An A-pillar gauge pod as shown in this pic
2. Aftermarket 3-gauge cluster under your radio
3. try to find a factory 2-gauge cluster for under the radio as shown in this pic

well when i had did my ls i changed it to the ss and the only thing that worked was the speedo and the fuel but the rest did not work.and if i remember right the wires did not match up (i could be wrong because i did not look in to it more that that because i sold the car shortly after)
but i had checked it when i put it in and did not work.and it looked like the wires where at the wrong place for some of the gauges.

Might just have been the sensors need to be switched over to gauge sensors and not idiot light sensors. It just depends on how original you want it to look.

yeah not sure if i had changed them or not? (that was like7-8years ago)
but you can get a nice trio pack and put it on the side of the dash looks real nice
i will try to find some picks if you would like.
and the pilar pod as mentioned b4 would work great and look good too !
