Default Fuel spill problem!

For like a week now, I have been smelling gas everytime I fill up at the gas station. So yesterday, I once again filled up and somebody flagged me down to tell me that I was leakin fuel when i drove off. Now, just by lookin, I cant find the problem so has anyone been through this situation. If so, please let me know....

You might have a crack somewhere towards the top of the tank and it has to be full for it to spill out or when you accelerate the gas sloshes towards the rear of the tank and spills out. I had a car that had the gas smell around it and I couldn't find a leak until I finally climbed under the car and found a damp spot.

Thats the thing though 02montecarlo, I just changed my fuel pump last year (brand new, not an aftermarket part). I was thinking that the sealing around where the fuel pump is could be the problem.

Or, like Sliver say, it could be a crack somewhere on top, I just have to get underneath it to find where. Either or is a pain but a ASAP job that has to be taken of soon.

As far as Lucian*91, I know you all will laugh when I say "I don't even know how to check my MPG!" I don't know where to start or how to calulate...lol

Thank you all for the input on what could it be, thoughts I would have never thought of...Thanks AGAIN!

Go fill up tomorrow.

Drive for a couple days, take note of how many miles you've driven.

Fill up again.

Say you drove 100 miles and when you filled up the second time you put 5 gallons in.

100 miles / 5 gallons = 20 miles/gallon

You could also fill up the car and then look underneath for dripping. I would think that if someone stopped you because they saw it leaking, it's got to be pretty bad.

I understand that you don't want to fill it up all the way, spilling highly flammable liquid around is never a good idea. I think either way you should crawl under there and take a look. Know anyone who has a lift? A jack and jack stands?
