Default Fuel guage problems

The fuel guage in my 02 reads either full or empty. For instance, when I just went out, it showed empty and while I was driving it went all the way to full and stayed even though I have driven about 110 miles since I filled it up. Sometimes it will do the opposite. Is it the sending unit? I read in another post that it could be replaced through an access panel in the trunk. Is that correct?

Might sound silly to you, but try a tankful of Chevron gas before anything else. That Dextron does wonders cleaning sending units. I had a problem with mine on a trip to Reno. When I returned to Phoenix, filled up with Chevron andit cleared up after driving less than 50 miles.

RCONKIN......it's correct there is a panel in the trunk to get to the sending unit.just lift the carpet up in the truck right after the spare tire.........and right behide the back seats.theres a panel with about 8 little nuts take them off and you will see the sending unit

good luck with that

Thanks for the advice and help. My son put a tank of Chevron in it and I have not heard the results of that as we are at the beach for a week. He did call with another problem which may be another stopped up catalytic converter. I will post about that separately.
