Engine Revving/Accelerating by itself
I have a 1997 Monte Carlo. The engine is revving and accelerating by itself. My son drove it around the block and didn't use the gas pedal. When the car is started, it cuts out and then starts revving on it's own.
Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Please post as much information as you can to help members
help to solve your problem.
help to solve your problem.
If you don't have someone with knowledge to look @ it, I suggest
not driving it until someone with mechanical experience
can check it out.
Check back later on your thread question & see what
our other tech/member's post/suggest.
Good Luck

Space. its a 97, not a 77.
From the sounds of it, it could be your IAC ( Idle Air Control ). Is your Check Engine light on? You might want to have it checked anyways. Just take it to AutoZone and let them hook up the hand-held and see if there are any codes.
Hope this helps.

What size engine is that? I actually was watching a video recently about someone with a 3800 engine doing that... said primary cause was a bad upper intake manifold. Dont remember the specifics on why but videos were on www.automechs.com for the Buick Regal.

Problem solved!
My boyfriend popped the hood and looked. He could hear a vacuum leak. There is a little silver valve that has a line running to it with a cap on the end of it. He put it back on and the problem was solved!
I can't believe how amazing this car is! I bought it brand new back in 1997. It has 199,000 miles on it and is still going strong! I am letting my teenager drive it for his first car. I realize it may not last much longer (especially with a teenager driving it), but I am thankful for how good ths car has been. It has never had ANY major problems! (knocking on wood). I loved this car so much, that I bought another one a few years ago.
Most of the miles on the car are from when I used to drive it 90 miles round trip to work everyday for 7 years. I work at home, and my new Monte Carlo gets to stay in the garage most of the time.
Right now, the A/C compressor has a leak. We charged it and the A/C only worked for 2 days until it all leaked out again. I found a new compressor for $200. I am thinking about buying it and finding someone to install it. I have no idea how much that will cost.
