Default Engine help

I have a 86 Monte SS, it has a 350 and a 700r4 trans. I bought it off this guy who said it had been sitting for 3-4 years. It was not running and the shifter cable was broken.

Purchased a new shifter cable and installed it, went on to the engine. Replaced all the spark plugs, a new battery, flushed the radiator and drained old gas.

I think the guy also said it had a B&M torque converter in the trans, and a 750 edelbrock carb. Ok with all that said i must say I'm not a real knowledgeable car mechanic, I'm learning as i go, doing the work is no problem but when it comes to diagnosing a problem i am in need of some help.

After installing the new shifter cable i tried o get the motor running, cleaned a few things and replace all stated above. I sprayed carb cleaner in and started the engine took a few cranks but it started, idled a little rough at first but is leveling out, i figure getting all the old stuff out. Fast foward a few days it runs pretty good but when you start giving it gas it dies out, starts back up but the more you start it the harder it is to get started. It won't stay running, it did stay running enough to move it a couple of times, died a few times in moving, but another problem came up, it doesn't seem to want to go in reverse. It does go in drive, talked to a buddy and said it maybe low or no trans fluid. Put some in and reverse started to work, drove it down to the end of the road and back, had to park it cause it was to dark to work on it. Couple of days went by back to work on it, started up fine and idles good. When given gas in reverse it revs real high and then dies, also does it in park, revs and then dies.
