Exclamation Electronic Keys

Hi Member's,
How much stuff do you have on your key ring ?
I've learned that it's not good to have multi keys/etc hanging from your ignition...., cause it can cause wear to the lock......4-Sure....It happened to my Grandfather's Van, and
a new ignition switch can be costly....

A employee @ work has one of those keys that you just keep in your pocket & when you touch the door handle of his Evo, it opens & you don't need 2 insert the key to start...It's pretty `sweet 4-Sure.....

Even the most basic parts of an automobile are becoming highly electronic. Take the lowly key for instance. They have circuit boards in them, such as we see here. Now, this one is a big one because it's an old one, but, you know, they have all of this stuff miniaturized and it's built into the key. Well, if you have something like this, you're probably not going to do anything disastrous with it. But, you know, if you do, then you're looking at an expensive replacement. Here's a key, this is the cost of the key and programming, and yes, lots of these keys have to be programmed. But you say "I don't have anything like that;" well, you have a standard looking key like this, well believe it or not, this key has a transponder built into the head of it, miniaturized, and it talks to the anti-theft system in the car.
All right, what goes wrong here? Well, lots of times the lock gets gummed up or maybe it gets frozen-that's the really bad one-so you take your trusty lighter out and you start heating the key. Well, don't do it, because that can damage the transponder and now you have to replace the key. Also, don't soak it in water and don't pour water down into the door trying to thaw things out because hot water can damage all the electronics in there.
What do you do? Lock de-icer, and that you simply put into the lock from the outside, it'll thaw the lock out, then follow it by a lubricant such as this Lock-Eze which gets sprayed into the lock. Now, you do that on all the locks on the car twice a year and your locks will last longer… well, that is unless you do this, because many of you have these monster key-rings with all sorts of garbage on them. You put it in there, you start the car, and as you go down the road stuff and all this stuff is jingling back and forth… well, that can cause the key to wear the tumblers inside the lock and you're looking at an expensive repair. The only thing you should have on your key-ring is the ignition key and, if your car has one, a door key-and nothing more! Especially nothing like this… this is a transponder that opens the door to the office. Well, that transponder can talk to the car before the one in your key, and you'll have this mysterious intermittent no-start problem that nobody can find. Just the two keys on your key-ring!

Are Your Keys Hurting Your Vehicle?

Published on January 6, 2009 by

True or false: Heavy keys can cause major damage to your vehicle.

Throughout the years there has been a great deal of dispute about whether heavy key rings can actually cause damage to your vehicle. “How,” many people wondered, “can something as small as a key ring do serious damage to something as large as a ?” It seemed to be just a little too farfetched for people to grasp. So what’s the deal? Do heavy key rings actually cause damage to your vehicle, or is this whole proposal one of the many hoaxes some poor mechanic came up with on a slow day? It is in fact- true.
While it’s factual that a heavy key ring won’t cause any serious damage to the insides of your car, it will harm your ignition which is just about as important as the rest of your vehicle. After all, what good is having a

When you get into your car in the morning, fresh out of bed and preparing for a new day’s you don’t often think about the mechanics of your vehicle. Truth be told, inside that ignition (the thing you put your key in to start it) is a great number of complicated bits and pieces that all work together to form-fit and assist in the starting and operating of your vehicle. And because the ignition switch of every car is remarkably similar (Govt. Mandated) and therefore mass-produced, manufacturers more often than not tend to out low-quality material to meet demands. Now if the fact that the ignition turns on and allows your car to operate didn’t make it precious enough, the fact that the parts inside of your ignition probably aren’t as top-quality as they should be makes it even more so.

So what could happen if these precious parts inside of the ignition switch do break? Well there are a number of responses you could receive from your vehicle, and a number of things dictate these responses. Type of vehicle, where it’s broken, etc. But the most common responses involve your steering wheel locking up, the car not starting, or your vehicle shutting off at random times and without warning during your drive. Obviously none of these are desirable from your important source of transportation. And if by chance you don’t find that frightening enough, maybe when you discover the outrageous cost of replacing an ignition switch (labor included), you’ll be swayed. You’ll no doubt be paying over a hundred on your car alone, not to mention cost of towing and any other fees to get yourself out of the mess you got in. And depending on where you have it done and the model of your car, you could very well buy new tires with the money you would be dishing out for your new ignition switch. And might I add that your car’s warranty won’t cover the cost of replacing it?
