Default the dreaded "low engine oil" message

My car ('02 SS 3.8L w/ 41K) is misbehaving. Yesterday I got the "low engine oil" message. Sure enough she was a quart low. I added a quart and the message went away. I had my oil changed 3 months/2500 mi ago. There are no signs of a leak that I can see (this happened last night so I'll check in the daylight). I've owned my car since January. Do these cars burn oil? Is this indicative of a known problem? Maybe the gasket failing? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Mike

If its not leaking or burning it then check your oil and coolant for signs of it mixing. 3800's are not really known for consuming oil unless theres a problem.

While I had the recall taken care of I asked the dealership to check for oil leaks. Their response was the only oil leak was from the valve cover gasket they replaced! Hopefully that explains the low oil light a few weeks ago. So far so good on the oil level since.

Default RE: Discussion 13

My 02 does this every 6-8 months, all I have found was the Oil sending unit getting confused and not working properly, it can go bad causing oil to leak from it or even not allow the oil pressure gauge not to work

Thank you for the response. I added oil and the indications went away and has not come back. The dealership mentioned that the front valve cover gasket was leaking when they replaced it as part of the recall. Hopefully that was it. If it reappears in a few months, I check the sending unit. My fingers are crossed.
