Question Drained coolant, expected much more...

So, as part of a coolant level sensor (faulty) and thermostat (while I was there) replacement, I figured I'd do a full ChrisFix-style "super flush". Everything went more-or-less fine, but I never drained/replaced more than about a half-gallon of liquid from the system. Also, the distilled water never came out clear...just a little less muddy than last time. The car's not overheating and there are no codes being thrown. Thoughts? Is my radiator just so full of sludge that there's only room for two quarts of liquid? Is my next project to remove the radiator and power-flush it with a hose or something?

Your engine block holds a bunch of fluid, the radiator only holds so much.

How many times did you add water and run the car and then drain?

Six times, I believe. Never had to add more than 3/4 gallon before it was full again.

The radiator should hold 4-6 quarts, so that's roughly a gallon to a gallon and a half. It's possible that you have some build-up preventing the full capacity of the radiator.

I'd say if you aren't experiencing overheating, then I would just top the system off, fill the overflow, and let it be.

If you were to do anything removing the radiator, I would just replace the thing. They should be cheap enough.

Been year since I have done more than drain the coolant. But.... Last time I did an actual flush, I used a kit from the parts store that lets you connect a garden hose to a T you install on a heater hose. Works pretty well to get crud out of the system.

I have only drained the coolant in my Monte and re-placed (I have yet to actually flush it).

Not sure where you are at, but for me, I would elect to do this maintenance during warmer weather if I could.
