Default Code P0171 (Lean bank 1)

Hey guys, my '99 keeps on pluggin.

I got a Code the other day, P0171. Engine kept starting, running, idling fine. From what I've read, it means "lean bank 1". Can be caused by a lot of things, intake leak, failing fuel pump, bad O2 sensor. I used my blue tooth code reader to delete the code and it hasn't reappeared in 2 days. I still have my original fuel pump. 218,000 miles.

More than likely an O2 sensor. One upstream where the exhaust manifold is at the firewall, one downstream after the catalytic converter. Probably best to replace both, since the CEL light stays on after more than 2 stored codes.

Thanks for the reply, Mark! The CEL has not returned since my first post. Those O2 sensors are the originals. I'm wondering how hard it will be to loosen them.

I bought this car new almost 18 years ago! I am thinking of it's replacement. I'm thinking of a Chevy Volt!

If you're going to mess with them, use PB Blaster or the WD-40 version of Liquid Torch, and even with using the special tool to remove the old ones,be prepared for a bear of a struggle. Especially the upstream sensor. Be glad they lasted this long, and the new ones will go the same distance.

I'm also planning on letting mine go,it's getting hard to get in/out of on the passenger side. We just bought a HHR a month ago.
